Yesterday was PA opener. I had already used my buck tag on an 8
point during archery season. I saw 8 different bucks the first morning (wouldn't you know it). I did have 2 doe tags though. I passed up several easy shots on yearlings and button bucks so I never fired the gun yesterday.

Today I got my first chance. A large doe at 30 yards was a slam dunk with the Ruger SBH 44 mag.with ultra dot red dot. I was using A 240gr. Hornady charged with enough H110 to produce 1340fps. The deer was facing my way with a slight angle. Bullet when through left front shoulder and exited throgh the pelvis. Full body penetration. My brother commented on the blood from the exit wound. There was blood sprayed 20 yards behind the point of impact. Bang flop right there. The best part it was only 40 yards from my truck.

Sorry no pictures my camera fogged internally. Now I have to decide what gun to use for last tag.

WTG!! Nice not to have a 'trackin' job.

It's not the gun, but the man behind it.

Dan, you need to post a poll on which gun you should hunt with like you did a couple years back. If I remember right you took a nice buck with your 30 Herrett the next day.

TCMan everyone says that but if it's cared for properly I haven't been able to tell a difference. The only thing I do know is no matter how long you boil those horns they never get tender!

WTG. Sounds like a fun delima to have, deciding what gun to use for the next Deer. Unfortunately for me I am out of tags.

Congrats.

Nice! Everybody likes big bucks, but doe hunting can be just as fun. Also a good way to keep the population in check.

Sorry… I was trying to be funny. I think the toughness of an animal actually depends more on the age than the sex. From my experiences an older dear isn’t as tender as a younger one.

I agree with that. I think that lettin an older deer hang a couple of days if possible aways helps. I think it has nothing to do with the sex of the deer but the age. Just my opnion. No game meat is bad meat, low in fat and high in portein. Long live the backstraps.

Thanks for the replies. Had to curtail hunting a couple days to get a little work done but hoping to get out tomorrow. I narrowed it down to the 357 Herrett or my TC Hawken flintlock. At the ranges I typically get to shoot (75yards and less) the Herrett should be a slam dunk. And I would like to get a coyote with the pistol. But with the flintlock I'm never quite sure if the darn thing will go off. That could let me stretch my season a little longer since I'm on my last tag. The curse of a compulsive shooter. So many guns to like that its hard to fall in love with just one type.

I need a 4 week long season to even get close to hunting with them all!! Usually start the deer season w/ at least seven guns ready to go.
