I have a Ruger Redhawk and a S&W629 and am considering shooting some cast ammo.Is GC bullets better?Do they help the leading problem? And I am down to either Cast Performances 300WFNGC or Beartooths 300WFNGC.When loading these 2 in particular do you have to grease the bullets?Give me some opinions and advice please.

Those bullets will come already lubed. Gas check bullets do help with leading. Depending on the hardness of the lead they may or may not be necessary. Garrett Cartridges, for example, are plain base and not gas checked.

Gary is right on... Again!

Look at there web sights and they will generally tell you if they are lubed. Generally if they are gas checked they are sized and lubed. CALL THEM if you are in doubt. From what I have learned even the type of lube used on the bullets helps with leading.

I have never had a problem with leading using plain base Cast Performance bullets.

Leading is also a function of how fast you push them in addition to the hardness.

Leading is a function of how fast you push them and how hard the bullet is. Drive too soft a bullet too fast and you get leading. Drive too hard a bullet too slow and you get leading.

I used to have a S&W 629. It seemed like it only needed to go within 20 feet of a lead projectile to get a badly leaded barrel. Tried all sorts of different lead projectiles and loads.

May have been cylinder to barrel line-up, forcing cone finish, made on the wrong day of the week, phase of the moon! Never could work it out.

These days I have a Ruger SRH454. I've been using Westcastings projectiles which are a hard cast lead projectile with some special sort of coating. Haven't had any leading period. Thats despite running them at full house loads. Great stuff.

As well as throat size and groove diameter. You can push "softer" bullets relatively fast if they're sized correctly.

I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a handgun today.
