That 10" .357 Herrett went and did it!
It ended another deer season too soon.

I guess in it's defense it was sort of a self defense shooting. One of my stands is a 25ft section of triangular TV antenna mast attached to the side of a tree right next to a little creek. Well I was up there today having a hot cup of tea when I hear what sounds like a stampede coming through the woods on the frosted leaves. I turned around to see a herd of at least 20 (could have been 25) running straight towards my tower at full bore. Behind them like a second skirmish line was another five deer perhaps 50 yards behind Now they have to jump this tiny little creek to get to my side. Well one of the deer in the first line caught a leg on some brush just as it jumped and stumpled when it touch down on my side and plowed into my tower!
It nearly dumped me over the edge. Fortunately I do wear a harness. Anyway the rest of the deer in the first wave ran buy without slowing down. By the time I regained my footing the second wave arrived and a big old doe paused just long enough to watch the fallen deer scrample for footing and let me get the crosshairs on her. The 180 Hornady moving at 1850fps only had to go about 25-30 yards. Bang flop, dead right there. I didn't weigh her but she was one of the largest doe I have shot in many years.

That what I love about hunting you just don't know what is going to happen.

Sorry about the pictures my little camera I carry hunting fogged up internally in the rain last monday on our opening day and it still hasn't dried out. I wish I had it today I could have gotten some crime scene photos at the point of attack.

I'll have to go back and do that sometime to show you guys this site. To look at it you would wonder why anyone would ever hunt there. It's on the lower corner of our property and there is very little cover. The deer don't stay there long but they sure do cross there going from one wood lot to the other. It is always fast action here when its time to shoot because they don;t linger in this area. This is farm country with lots of corn and scattered wood lots. I found this spot in the late 70's and have killed literlly dozens of deer here. Before PA change there antler restriction laws I had a string of 12 consectutive years of getting a buck out of that honey hole.

Gasser...you're in Crawford or Mercer County? What twp? I know my wa around that area somewhat.

Wow, it hit the stand. Good thing you were wearing a harness. It would have sucked laying there all crippled up watching all those deer go by! At least you dropped one. Great hunt.

I live in Coolspring Twp, Mercer County at a developement called Lake Latonka. But I Hunt in Pine Twp outside Grove City where I grew up. When I first started hunting we considered ourselves lucky to see A DEER on the first day. When I went to college at Clarion in the 70's I was amazed by the stories of guys seeing 50-100 deer on the first day in Marrianville, or Potter county. Now things seem to have flip flopped. Very few deer in the Mountains of God's Country and a bunch of them in our area. Our problem here is limited land access. I would venture a guess that 75% of Mercer County is posted. If you don't own property or know someone who does than you have to compete on overcrowded available spots.

Sounds Like they were out for vengeance!!! I've heard of deer attacking people but never in a synchronized military operation!!! Way to show em whose boss!!!
