Dad and I were the only ones to score in our little group of six or so hunters. I got three (1 buck and 2 does) and dad got two (one buck and one doe). We also put more effort into the season than the others. Dad bagged his doe this afternoon with a NEF 7mm-08 (Varget and 139gr BTSP) topped w/ a 2-10X Weaver at just under 200yds.

All in all...a good season. Saw lots (6) really nice bucks and plenty of does. One of my honeyholes was over run with hunters that recently discovered it...so I did not take any deer out of there this year. Tested several virgin toys (RSBH Hunter .45LC, XP .300 Savage and Model 7 7mmSAUM) and all did very well with the current loads so I see no need to further experiment with those recipes.

The sad part...it's another 11.5 months until I get to do it again...at least in PA. That part really bums me out. Anyone want to adopt a sadden hunter handicapped by short season to hunt w/ you in a state with longer season and more liberal bag limits??!!

During Feb I'll be going out of state to do some crop damage hunting...30 tags...yeah baby!! And this fall I should be going west to hunt antelope!! That should satisfy the itch until the 2009 PA gun season rolls around.

There is always a bit of sadness when the season ends.

After December muzzle loader season, I have the first fifteen days in January to use my handgun on does only. Two does per/tag along with plenty of tags in eastern Nebraska.

After deer season is over I hunt the most dangerous game known to man. Squirrels and bunnies. Almost ran over by a squirrel this morning while muzzle loading for deer. Muzzle loader season is all of December so I have to be on my guard. Squirrels can attack at any time.

My deer season is done as well. I hunt in the U.P., and hunted nearly all of the 16 day regular gun season as well as the last weekend of the muzzleloader season. Our small crew only got one buck this year; a nice 10 pointer. We saw a lot of smaller bucks but most were not legal to shoot (our DMU is a Quality Management Unit and bucks must have at least three points on a side). I did see a nice six pointer but decided not to shoot it. Having shot more than my share of bucks over the past 50 years, I don't have a great urge to shoot something and pretty much look for the "big one" these days. In spite of last year's severe winter, I did see a lot of does and fawns but our camp doesn't shoot fawns and besides, only one of us had a doe tag. So, while it's always a little sad when the season ends, I greatly enjoyed my time at camp and in the woods and am already planning/preparing for next year's hunt.

We have two more days this weekend in Ohio. Hope to see something. Only saw one doe during the first season...no shots. Too many out-of-towners hunting the neighbors property. I heard all kinds of shooting and ducked to the ground more than once. What the heck are they shootin' at? There was never only one shot...usually 3 or more shots at one time! Crazies!!!!

I know!! There were several folks during out gun season that shot three, four and even five round bursts so fast you just KNOW they could not have been aiming.

I pulled the trigger three times...and harvested three deer.
