What type of bullet do you prefer to shoot from your handgun on biggame or smallgame?

Myself, I prefer a lead bullet w/gas check.

I am just curious how many handgunners shoot lead vs jacketed.

Really depends on the game. 240 grain cast are much easier on squirrels than jacketed from my .44 mag; on deer there isn't as much difference in performance. The percentage of gas check bullets I shoot is small. I mostly use plain base bullets. These days, most of my loads are 1,200 fps or less in revolvers. I've found any extra is mostly just noise and recoil and little or no increase in penetration.

Mostly cast in the 1100-1200fps range.

I prefer my boolits to be fully clothed. I don't see any advantage using naked boolits, other than cost if you cast. It may be overstated but there are some health concerns especially if you shoot indoors, although that is not my motivation. For cheap fodder I like the plated jobs by Ranier et al.

Big fat hard cast gas checks for hunting! Work every time, the same way, w/exit holes! Consistency, accurate, & cheaper. Health nonsense. Your just as exposed to air borne lead w/jacketed types. Primer compound releases a lot. Outdoors anyway. I practice w/what I hunt with. I don't change my sights. One gun one load!

With the cost of jacketed bullets these days, I'll be shooting more bullets I've cast myself - from wheelweights. With my .45 Colt, cast is the only thing I shoot. Once I find the right mould, my .30-30 barrel will become a cast shooter as well.

I prefer premium jacketed unless I want penetration and then I go to premium hardcast like Cast Performance or True Shots, my two favorites are the Nosler Partition and the XTP Mag. I have been looking at the new Nosler monolithic solid, it's designed to have the same point of impact as the Partition and is available in the same weights, it also has multiple crimp grooves. I think if my 375JDJ ever see's dangerous game I'd probably load up with them but right now they are only available in 375, 416, and 458 cal.

Is true. I said it a bit too strong. Yes? No offense intended. I know a few who reload w/filter masks on.

I don't know, I still put split shot on my fishing line with my teeth and I'm ok, I think.

I'm starting to change over to cast for all my handguns. It takes time though. I use them for hunting and plinking and when shooting at steele targets I like cast.

Funny Rod I didn't know there was any other way to put split shot on!I have been jacketed only up until this point.I am going to try some cast this off season and if I can get a load to work that I feel confident in I am making the switch.
