Got a chance to hunt some pork coming up,and need some advice on ammo for the job.I will be using my Redhawk 44 mag.Looking to put it down quick where we will be hunting,it's extremely thick and I don't fancy crawling through the bushes much after a mad boar.Average shot less than 60 yards.

Winchester Partition Gold - I'll second that.

The Oregon Trail 310gr hard cast FP at around 1350fps works great as well. Or any similar heavy hard cast. Your Redhawk might accommodate the long Buffalo Bore 340gr+P cartridges as well (my custom S&W 29/2 didn't). This should be an exceptional bullet for boar. Just remember shot placement - the lungs of a boar are very small compared to the animal itself.

Also, consider the boiler room on a boar to be lower than we're accustomed to on a deer. Lower third of its body, sharply quartering away should bring him down. A bullet placed just below the ear works good, too.

.....A bullet placed just below the ear works good, too. The only thing bad about the "behind the ear shot" is, you don't get any blood trailing practice...LOL
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

Cotton, If you go to the bragging and look in my photos you will find a nice fat boar with my 44 Redhawk on top of him. I hit him with one round of Winchesters partition ammo at 20 to 25 yards. They work.....

Thanks guys for all the info,I was figuring a partition in the boiler or a cast through the shoulders with a partition behind just in case.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Assuming you meant factory stuff. Federal 300 grn Cast Cores in spades!!!!!! If you encounter a big hog, penetration may be lacking with an expanding bullet, especially if he has a thick gristle plate. Federal Cast Cores are good, but I have also used Double Tap ammo's 320 grain WFNs in a couple of my .44s on hogs. You have enough diameter with the .44, now you need penetration to the vitals. I prefer two holes........

I used a 265gr Hard cast semiwadcutter and a very stiff load of 2400 in my 8 3/8 M29. 55yds-bang -thump on the ground. The only thing that came after the squeal was steam from the hole!! In one side-out the other. I wanted penetration, the Hog got it. The only pigs I saw run after being shot were ones shot with lighter faster rifle bullets-bad choices in my mind.

Which is the same bullet that I use in cast bullets from Rim Rock Bullets if you reload. Otherwise for just hogs, I've not tried the Nosler but have heard very good things and seen results from that bullet.

What would you say is a big hog? I have put 45 cal 250 XTP HP's through 200 lb pigs at 85 yards and I have put 44 cal 300 Gr XTP slugs through 250+ pigs. The the only thing I have ever had an issue with was 180's but he still was dead at the end of the day. I like the HP's better for game like Pigs-- Leaves about a 1" hole on the back side & make a huge THUMP when it hits if you are any distance you can hear the bullet hit.

Hollow Points, not for me Hard Cast with big flat points are the order of the day. Penetration is never lacking and they leave wound channels that nothing can live through. I've used them all and have been handgun hunting since the late 60's. Flat points only for me.
