I am thinking about getting a new barrel for my Encore. I am looking for something that has a little more velocity than the 308 and 7-08 that I am shooting now. I know I don't NEED more velocity I just want it. The calibers I have been kicking around are the 280 GNR, 310 GNR, 270 JDJ (the one that is based on the 06 case not the one he based off the 225 win) or the 30-06 JDJ. What do ya'll think, I am open to suggestions?

NJS,
Any of the wildcats based off of the 06 case will give you a lot of horsepower. Certain velocity range you wanting to attain with a specific caliber/bullet weight?
Nolser makes 280 Ackley Improved brass-Also another good and easy to cartridge.
Either way, the critters are not going to be able to tell the difference. Go with the cartridge/barrel builder that you want and enjoy!

To get significantly more velocity you'll also have to lengthen your barrel beyond the 15" standard. You can pack more powder into the chamber but without the steel to get the most out of it you will not see a huge gain from say the 308 to the 30-06. Just going to an 18" barrel in your .308 or 7-08 will add 100 FPS in and of itself. Now add a half dozen grains of powder to that and bang-zoom.

I'd like a 280 AI in an Encore, just wish it were rimmed.

Rod, too.

I like the 280 AI but would lean towards the 280 GNR or 310 GNR. I like rimmed cases in the singe shot and I also like Reeder’s work. Those GNR’s are also based off the 405 and do not require fireforming. Just my .02… so take it for what it is worth.

NJS,
Call JD and talk with him about his JDJ's off the '06 case, and get his recommendation. A .284 Win or 6.5/ .284 might also be possibilities.
