I have relocated to the Austin, TX area and I'm curious who is nearby? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to respond in public.

Gary, you are definently in the land of opportunity, when it comes to handgun hunting...you can hunt something 24/7...best wishes to your new home.

Call a Game Warden. There are a lot of farmers that need help with hogs. Never know were it might lead and you might get lucky.

Give me 2.5 years. I have a job lined up with the Texas State Troopers already. It also looks like I have a VERY good shot at the Game Wardens.

Did you get a new gig Gary? I finally found a pretty good job recently as well. It took a couple months of looking but finally got what I was looking for.

Big antlers down in Texas. You should have some good pictures for us next season. Sounds good!

Although, you'll have to put up with all the TX longhorn fans.

Gary, how much room do you have? I'll be down for a visit/hunt in the future!! Always wanted to hunt Texas with a short iron.

I use to deliver in the Austin area quite a bit. The refinerys use lots of heavy stuff.

Gary I'm sure you know but I'll throw it out there anyway. Cabelas has a store in Buda TX. That's about 15 miles from Austin. I spent the weekend there a while back waiting to reload. Cabelas is great as they have parking in the back for big trucks and large campers.

What little public hunting there is in Texas, is generally by application and draw in very limited areas. In the Hill Country (Austin and west area) there are usually at least a thousand applicants for very few permits. The Parks & Wildlife has a pretty good synopsis of the areas on their website. When they say hunting is by "compartment", they mean you get an assigned area to hunt and that's the only place you can hunt, no matter how big the wildlife preserve is. Not all are like that, but most are. I have bowhunted a few places and it can be anywhere from good to miserable. Just depends on the area.
Farther to the south, San Antonio and south, there are a lot of ranches that offer deer, hog, and exotic hunting. Of course you have to pay. Nice thing about exotics is that you can hunt most of them year round. Some places have reduced rates for groups so it might be an opportunity for several of us to put together a package deal.
Gary, my son lives in Austin. He can probably offer some general advice for getting around the city, if you need it. Let me know.
Are you (or anyone else) going to the RMEF show in Ft. Worth in March?

Welcome to Texas Gary I am a native texan born and raised here. I live near the gulfcoast but I hunt in the east/central area of the state most of the time around Centerville, but I also hunt the hill country around Kerrville a couple of times a year. Most of the land in Texas is private so you will have to lease or pay for day hunts. Therte are many ranches in Texas that sell hunts deer or exotics.Enjoy your stay in Texas, Austin is a beautiful part of the state. God bless
