Is there a minimum FPS that it needs to travel in a 44 to properly expand?

I can't find the info on their site right now but I know I've seen it and I think the standard xtp is about 1200fps and the mag is 1400fps (those are muzzle velocities) I may be wrong but if you give the application, type of game, caliber and range, we should be able to tell you if it will work or not.

You do not state the caliber , however, the standard XTP has a floor threshold velocity of 850 and 800 fps for the standard .44 and .45 caliber bullets respectively. The mag .45 caliber bullet has a floor threshold velocity of 1,200 fps. (5th Edition Hornady manual)

If a bullet you shoot begins to get close to these velocities, its tendency will be to act more as a solid than an expanding bullet. Considering both bullets are nearly one-half inch in diameter, this should not be a problem as long as your bullet passes through the animal.

Below is what one looks like after it has gone through a hog @ about 1350 fps +/-
They work great for me in my 12" T/C

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Here is a link to a chart by Hornady listing the min and max range for XTP expansion. It also has a pic of a guy most folks here will recognize.

I've looked at that page several times in the past, before and after I've been a part of this forum, and never until now recognized who that was. Wow! Nice going james.

i have killed 6 deer with 44 mag and the hornady240xtp.every deer dropped in its tracks but one-it went 12 yards and fell.velocity was 1140fps.
i have killed one with the 300xtp-velocity was 1060fps and the deer also fell down.i now use the 240's due to recoil.none of the bullets exited the animals -furtherest shot was 40 yards or so

My only deer kill so far was a doe of about 125lbs at around 50 yards. The 300gr XTP at some 1300fps made a substantial wound channel and exited persuasively, as can be seen here:

The doe ran about 25 yards before piling up, all in a matter of seconds.

Hornady's site it totally WORTHLESS for any useful information. The table with useful information for the reloader/shooter is in the manual I have(and maybe the current manual also). Too bad the dufus in charge of the content of their web site does not put useful info on the site with all the "sales pitch" for each bullet.

Makes me think of all the hassle I went thru to get BC info from Remington on their selection of bullets for the reloader.

Maybe they don't have a grasp of the sophistication of the average reloader today!

Whoa, as I peruse the posts I see they finally have a chart of useful info hidden some place on their site. . . I had quit wasting my time on their site seeking information. How hard would it be to put all this info with each bullet.

Call them... I called them with a question one time and got, “you are shooting XYZ?, shoot this bullet, we designed it for that cartridge. It ended up being the most accurate combination I shot out of that barrel.
