Your hiking in the Wasatch Mtn.s of northern Utah when your path is blocked by a pissed off Shiras moose in the rut. What handgun/ load combination would you want on your hip??
My answer would be either a FA`s 454 with Cor-Bons 320grFPPN or a FA`s 475 and Grizzly`s 390gr Belt Mtn. punch bullet ammo.

with what I have ready now it would be my 475 Linebaugh with either 400gr XTP's or 425gr CP hardcast. Once it's finished it will be the 500 Linebaugh with the 435gr CP hardcast.

.500 Linebaugh with 450 Keiths should handle the situation quite nicely. Moose; it's what's for dinner.

Thr first thing I would want on my hip is a non-resident hunting license and a once in a lifetime Utah bull moose special permit. If I had that, I would be carrying a .475 Linebaugh FA with alternating 400 gr. XTP's and 420 gr WFN's driven by 25.6 gr of H-110. If I didn't have that license, I'd try like Hell to back out of there.

I would have my 4 ¾” FA 83 in 454 Casull with either 335-grn Cast Performance or 360-grn True Shots and hope I had time to use it.

475 Linebaugh with 385 WFN.
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

A tree with low branches and plenty of them!!! Then I would worry about shooting. Biggest six-er I have is a .45LC launching 340gr Penns at 1300fps.

I reckon I take my FA 454 with a 300 gr cast bullet. I've taken one moose with it, so I know it will get the job done.
But I wouldn't feel undergunned with my 45 Colt Ruger Bisley loaded hot with a 300 gr cast.
If I were buying a new gun I'd get the FA or BFR in 475 Linebaugh

Well, I just printed out the Maine moose hunting regulations and they state clearly that taking a moose with a handgun demands that the gun is of at least .25 caliber.....So your .32S&W would be almost overkill....

local gun shop has 2 Ruger BH .44 i have been dreaming of. If i found my self in the situation you describe i would want one loaded as hot and heavy as i can get. already have an under study for one of them. just waiting for the money for the big brother.

I would go with my 4" .44 mag Redhawk loaded with 320 grain CPB. This is what I rely on around here any time I go out for protection from moose, grizzly or two legged predators.

I would hope that my 44 mag ruger redhawk with 300 grain corbon would help, but I would hope to find a tall tree to climb and figure it out from there. I hope to add a 480 ruger to my collection soon.

The 445 Super Mag with a 300gr pill.
The 460 Smith with a 300gr pill
The SRH in 480 Ruger with a 325 or 400gr pill.
The 500 Smith with a 350gr pill.
All I really need is my single six so I can shoot my hunting partner in the knee and out run him. LOL<LOL

How about a S&W M60 38 special so I can shoot you in the leg--that way I can out run you and come back later to collect your gear! Actually, I'd like my S&W 4" M500 stoked with 440 HCLSWC. Yes its heavy but it hits real heavy in situations like that.

@ about 2800 lbs +/- you can get a Turret off of one of our M1117 ASV's and you will have 96 Rounds of 40 MM and a GMG that has a 5 M radius. As well as 1500 rnds of a 50 cal MG AP Rounds. This will allow you to skip the processing step on the said Moose and take Zip loc's and scoop the ground beef with a small shovel. In a snap skip the shovel and just use one of the horn if it is left.
MK19 GMG is by far the coolest gun I have ever shot.
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I don’t have one but my first choice would be a FA 475. From what I remember Mr. Roger used it to take his Rhino. Out of what I have I would shoot my SBH 44 Mag with a 300 XTP on the second crimp line with a max powder charge. After being sent to Rod the gun shoots one ragged hole at 25 yards. ( THANKS ROD!!!!) With that being said, I might try for a head shot the first round and then shoot for the body on the next 4. Then I would be looking for bananas while playing monkey and reloading that 44 in a tree. (Would saving the brass at this point be a concern?) But I would probably keep shooting until it stopped moving. I will try to get some current photos of her up later but this it the best I can do right now. Would this be big enough?

Would saving the brass at this point be a concern? Friggin Hilarious!! I'd have a tough time dropping the brass. Would this be big enough? The gun or the woman??

I would find a good tree to get behind for cover. And Use my Desert Eagle .44 mag pushing a 300 gr.XTP @ 1300 fps. Two is one, one is none.

I was curious to see what you guys would feel comfortable with upon running into a touchy situation with a large wild animal, and asked the question "what gun/load combo would you want on your hip?". Since it was not a hunting question but one of simple survival I found some of your answers to be very interesting.Let me add that your answers went from dead serious to dead funny... What made me think of that question was remembering a piece from the "Armed Citizen" column in a past issue of American Rifleman where an un-named reader told of how he and his wife and children were hiking in the Rockies when their trail was blocked by a very mad bull moose. He goes on to say how he fired some shots to try and scare to animal away which failed and he then made the decision to do what he had to do to keep his family from harm. The story ended with him dropping the moose and he and his family safely getting out of the area with no mention of whether or not he reported the incident. PS- The handgun he used was a single action .500 Linebaugh.
