I just found out I drew a WY turkey tag here in the BH Basin!

Now I got to make sure my 22 Hornet is working right, and get my 22 mag (S&W 648) drilled and tapped so I can scope it.

Any body else going turkey hunting this spring?

Oh yes! Season opens 14 March and I'll be after them with my 'Tender 45/410.

We can only use scattterguns or archery equipment for spring birds in PA. So for four weeks I lug around my Mossy 835 loaded with Federal 3.5" (Flite Control Wad carrying #5's). This combo has dropped...correction...piled drived birds at 53yds and 45yds. It's also picked off a couple wounded birds that a hunting partner grazed and I laid in a follow up shot at near 50yds.

That gun kicks so bad that I slipped a "slip-on" recoil pad over the factory pad.

I usually hunt ~20 mornings of the 31 day season (month of May) here in NY. I use a Rem 870 Super Mag with 3 1/2" Winchester #5's. I'm considering getting a new SRM Terror Choke but they are on the expensive side and with turkey guns, nothing is a guarantee.

I had 2 ea. of the 835 Mossbergs when they first came out. After about 100 rounds thru ea. you could not eject the shell. The 2nd gun was the one they sent me when I sent the first back. I took the second back and the dealer returned it and gave me credit toward a 870 SM. It worked great until the buttstock caved in. I called Remington and they sent a call tag for the stock. Got a new improved model a few weeks later no charge. The 870 SM has been great. Don't think Remington figured in for the extra recoil.

I still would like to try a T/C 14" 410 barrel

After the Rabbit hunting videos it sure does look like fun.

I know Karl has killed a turkey or two with that barrel. That is just too cool

As for turkeys with a hundgun I have only taken 2 both were with a 10" .223 Contender in the early 90's Open sights both were about 80 yards.

My buddy made me quit taking it when I went with him he said I was cheating --- I was not letting them get close enough--- Dead is dead--1 yard or 200 yards

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

In OR you can't use anything smaller than a 20ga for turkeys but I haven't been since I left the southern part of the state where they are prevalent. I have an 870, Win model 12 featherweight and my favorite an old Stevens SXS, all are 12ga.

Good luck on your hunt and enjoy why you can, I see that obama wants to classify all shotgun actions chambered above .410 as assault weapons.

Scatterguns and archery only here in S.C. They give the kids first crack at em and my two boys made the most of it last season.

FLS, that's great. My son is chompin at the bit to get revenge on a gobbler. He has killed just about every legal game in Mississippi but, no gobbler..Yet. He's missed two and he's got the FEVER bad!LOL Maybe this year will be his year.

Awesome picture FLS. Great to see the young people of this nation out in the woods hunting instead of rambling the streets.
Thanks for pointing your two in the right direction. Thanks to all of you who take young family memebers or friends out in the great outdoors.

I have a spring tag for Wisconsin. April 29 - May 03. I will have to get out the shotgun for this one. WI only allows archery or shotgun. I have been trying for years to get my Dad to come along ... He retires next month, so he should have time to sit in the blind with me this year! I'm sure once he expiriences the thundrous sound of a gobble at first light and a big Tom doing the dance around a decoy at 25 yards he will be hooked just like I am!

Thanks fellas. We actually had another young fella that took 2 gobblers as well that morning but I dont want to post pics of someone elses child. Youth day coincided with the peak of the gobbling. They were suicidal. We had 6 birds on the ground by about 10 AM. I hope for a repeat in about 4 weeks.
