Longtime gun writer Hal Swiggett, 87, has died in San Antonio, Texas. A gun writer for over fifty years he was an African big game hunter with over 25 hunts with a handgun only, a 30-year contributor to Gun Digest, Field Editor of the "North American Hunter" and Senior Editor of Harris Publications. Swiggett was included in the "Top Ten" Outstanding American Handgunner Award ten times, served on the committee that built the NRA National Firearms Museum and was an ordained minister.

Just this week I received a card from Wilma, his wife, stating they were moving Hal to assisted living quarters. Hal was a great guy. I have fond memories hunting a few days with Hal and Ken French on the Y.O. Ranch. I took a sika deer using Hal's T/C in 300 Savage and Ken shot a nice whitetail. It was quite a treat to spend quality time with these gentleman. Hal will be missed.

He'll surely be missed. He was one of the writers that lit my fire for handguns.

When hunting at the YO ranch back in the 90`s I was waiting my turn on the chow line for lunch and a few people ahead of me was the great Hal Swiggett.I had all intentions of going up and introducing myself when all I could do was stare at he and all of the great handgunners that were also in line.He turned around ,caught me staring and gave me a smile and a quick wink of his eye which broke me out of my trance and also ended my thoughts of a introduction, however I`am glad to have had that brief encounter with one of the pioneers of handgun hunting...
he will be missed...

He was another of the good ones!

It's not the gun, but the man behind it.

Years ago the early 90s when I first thought about handgunning I wrote a few letters and he answered everyone.Even talked on the phone a time or two.Good fellow and seemed really down to earth. He use to write some for North American Hunter,I miss his articles.

Sorry to hear. However, his health has been failing badly in recent years. I was fortunate to meet him at the Y O several years ago. He used to be a fixture there and the stories of Hal still circulate among the staff.
