What do you hunt with your Contender in 30-30 Winchester?

IMO a 30-30 Super 14 Contender is one of the best all around rounds for handgun hunting. (30 Herret if you like 10" pipes). I like the "bulk" of the 30 caliber, it's fairly flat shooting and it's a mid pressure, so, the recoil isn't unruly.

I plan on taking it on safari and I am confident shooting anything under 300 lbs. within 125 yards. Small deer or varmints out to 200 yards.
But, I very much prefer to stalk to within 50 yards or closer. That's why I started handgun hunting in the 1st place.

Don't confuse shooting with hunting.
Shooting is a game, hunting is a sport.

When shooting a single shot their are no warning shots.

Deer and targets. I find myself shooting a lot of cast bullets lately - especially when target shooting. My old, six groove barrel handles cast really well and is surprisingly accurate. Great caliber in a 14" Contender, especially if you handload.

I have been hunting the Cape Cotton Tail with my 12 Inch Hunter tube. Stops a charge right now!

I use a load I picked up from the good folks at Handgun Hunter,10 Grains of Unique under a 110gr.Speer HP. Very accurate and doesn't destroy much of the eating parts.

I have a new MGM Contender bbl in 30-30win and plan on taking it on a hog hunt using CorBon's DPX. The guide service I'm going with(for the 1st time) appears to not like any guns other that flat shooting rifles for his hunters. He did say I can use what ever I want but that he didn't really approve. I'm taking my Win Mod 70 in .270 along as a backup. I have two months to shoot before the hunt. If all goes well I will use it on the hunt.

I personally wouldn't go over deer or small hogs but with that being said a gal I worked with hunts elk with a model 94 and factory ammo and she's done just fine so far. I definitely wouldn't classify it as an elk cartridge but it's amazing how many cartridges will do what they shouldn't.
