It's in better shape than I remember...inside and out this thing is clean with no signs of wear. It came with a low cap 10rd mag so the shop manager even gave me a 30rd mag for it. With that installed this thing looks wicked!!

Before I left to get it yesterday I loaded 100rds of .223 w/ AA2200 and 55gr SP's as starter ammo. So ASA I got home you know what HAD to be done!! I loaded the mag's (w/ only 5 rds at a time cuz I knew more than that and I would start rattling it off!!) and stepped out on the porch. Taking careful aim (shooting offhand), I centered the first five dead center on my steel plate at 50yds. The next five did the same thing and all ten were in a 2.5" group. Now the brass...where did that stuff go! I searched the porch until I found all ten pieces...definately gonna get a catcher for this thing!!

The biggest thing that will take some getting used to is all the "stuff going on" when the shot occurs...not used to the cycling of a semi rifle action. That was weird!!

So...I spent last evening looking at the Midway Master CAtalog just to get an idea of what is available for these things...holy crap!! There is a ton of stuff. Someone makes a 6.8SPC flattop upper...that would a sweet!!

Anyhoo...that's day 1 with my new AR. Definately different from anything I ever dealt with...but kinda cool!!

If you need a little help spending your money on the AR you could try ar15builder.com, Brownells, larue tactical, SSk is now supposed to have "competitively priced" uppers, superior arms, model 1 sales, dedicated technologies, J&T distributors, Tony's customs. I could probably come up with a couple dozen more too if you want :). Midway has quit a bit but its just a drop in the bucket of whats available.

Way to go Dan!
Welcome to the world of "black guns."
I will be getting my first "black handgun" this year.
Should be a hoot.

Congrats !
I love my Black guns, I call them the civil unrest equalizer. Get lot's of mags while you can. I like the 20 rounders. Also, a "Vortex" flash hider and Hogue grips.

Don't confuse shooting with hunting.
Shooting is a game, hunting is a sport.

Dan,

I recently joined the black-gun crowd as well! Mine is en route to my FFL right now. Never really had the urge until one of my hunting buddies got one - it is contagious, you know...

Like I needed another way to spend $$$ - between accessories and optics, looks like my next handgun just got delayed!

what you need now is a Frank White upper with a Hart or Douglas 1:7 and start shooting 80 and 90 grainers in the CMP matches. Ram Tac and a 52 or 55 grain match bullet =1 hole at 100!! I'll bring mine to teh SWPA shoot and we can play.

Seems that there is an abundance of 6.5G manufacturers where there are less of the 6.8...at least per the Midway Catalog anyhow. We'll see what I end up with...need to replenish the toy fund first!!

Cat...you are not helping!!

Dan,

Hope you enjoy the "black rifle". There is so much stuff available its easy to turn a light compact handy rifle into a 12 pound monster. If you can still see the standard iron sights than all you "really" need is a good weapons light. With that set up you can handle most social situations. I leave my carryhandle bushy set up in this simple format. If you want to explore the world of add ons get a second upper in flat top configurations and play as much as your money can stand. But as a go to shtf gun your basic bushy is hard to beat.

Ummm....yeah....about that. I've been meaning to start a new thread. The title was going to be "The best $50 AR Upgrade EVER!!"

Last Friday some friends and I were touring the gunshops of central PA looking for deals...this year we managed to hit 10 gun shops in one day...AWESOME!! Anyhooo....the last stop was the place closest to my house. They had a flattop DPMS heavy barrel .223 setting in the rack for $850.....brand new!! That bothered me all evening and on Saturday. So on Sunday I grabbed the Bushy and headed to a local gunshow and quickly sold it for $850(I bought it for $750). I knew that guys from that shop would have a booth...so I tracked them down and had them hold the DPMS. So on Monday I went and picked it up. This is one FINE piece of work!

So...what was the $50?? That's the extra I had to pay to cover the tax and transfer!

I loaded some 69gr SMK's and Varget...just need to hit the range...maybe this evening.

I think I would vote for that as the best $50 AR update. I would have been all over that. Around here that 223 would go for 1100-1500 right now.

Dan,

I know your a reloader so this won't probably matter much to you but be careful of the loads you shoot in dpms. At that price my guess is that is a chrome moly barrel ( not chrome lined) and that it was .223 remington chamber. For accuracy a great choice but use caution about firing mil-spec 5.45 ammo due to slightly higher chamber pressures. Is the gun marked .223 or 5.45 ?

Gasser...I'll check that out...but I plan on sticking with my handloaded .223 Rem ammo. It is a chrome moly barrel.

Had it to the range on Thursday...Varget and 68gr Hornady BTHP shoot great!! First batch with 24.9gr goes under 1" (many clustered into less than .5") but I'm still getting used to shooting the AR platform. I topped it with a Nikon 3-9X w/ BDC reticle. The reticle was close to being on...but it took one or two sighters to get it really figured out...after that at 300 and 500yds I was able to turn softball size rocks into powder.

jimmylee is conviced that I've walked over to the "dark" side...hopefully its just a temporary itch!!

Dan,

Hit the range yesterday with the Sig - still have irons on it, and played double-tap with the silhouettes until my wallet hurt.

Pick up the Eotech Wednesday - will break it in proper in Texas next week!
