I have been thinking about getting a 6mm-06 or 6mm-284 barrel for my encore. I was wondering how I would go about making the brass. I guess I could run 25-06 brass thru a 6mm06 die and come out with what I would need for the 6mm-06 or would there be more steps? As for the 6mm284 can I just use a 6mm284 die to neck down factory 284 brass? I am fairly new to reloading also. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think Ernie owns the 6x284 and he's probably about the most knowledgable person on here when it comes to the long range cartridges.

You are right for the 6mm-06. When every you neck down brass more than one caliber you need to make sure that the necks are not too thick. If they are turning or reaming are necessary.

You could use Hornady, Lapua or Norma 6.5-284 brass and neck it down to 6mm or you could as mentioned use 284 Winchester brass and start from there. One thing to find out if using the 6-284 is the chamber dimensions (especially the neck). LIkely if you are using 6.5-284 brass and necking it down to 6mm or 25-06 brass and necking it down to 6mm you will NOT need to do any neck turning. But find out for sure what your neck dimensions are. Once you size down your brass to 6mm, seat bullet deep enough so that the base of the bullet (if it is a flat base bullet) is close to the neck/shoulder juncture. Then take a pair of calipers and measure the neck. Once you know the neck dimension of the chamber and now the diameter of the neck with a seated bullet, you will know if you need to turn the necks or not.

They are 6, half-dozen, etc... I prefer the 6-284, because I like the Lapua brass. I have a 6-284, several 6.5-284's, and have had a 284 Win too. Comes down to personal preference. E
