Tell of your experiences shooting to 200 yards and beyound with an open sighted revolver. Give details bullet weight, caliber, velocity, etc.

If the discussion gits a bit off track that's fine with me. information is information IMHO

It was not quite 200yds but I did some 150yd shooting one day.

Was at the range and ran into an off duty police officer. I was shooting the usual LR SP's and he was banging away with an AR and Sig 226. After some time we got into talking and he handed me the Sig to shoot. He had been half way success at scaring the paint off the 150yds 10" steel plate but made very few hits after seveal mags full.

There were fifteen rounds in the mag...after two inital sighter shots I ID'd a rock over the plate that was my aiming point. I then hit the plate with nine of the remaining thirteen rounds...with no rest. I was shooting offhand. The Sig held very, very nice and had an awesome trigger.

As soon as the weather broke this year I went out with the 475 Linebaugh. I was shooting from the rolling hills here in nw PA. I was sitting on top of one hill shooting to the next one over about 250 yards. I was sitting in my beach chair with the 6" FA rested between my Knees. I was shooting at a 2'x2' piece of plywwod painted white. After I got the proper front sight hold out I hit it about 9 times out of 4 cylinders full. Load was a 400 grain ball cast from straight wheel weights sitting on top of 14 grains of HS6 in a Starline brass. This load goes about 1150 fps out of this gun. I was haveing a little trouble with the right sight picture for awhile, but it finally came around for me. I didn't think it was to bad for not shooting for 3+ months.

How much front sight above the rear sight did you need to get on target?
How far was your revolver sighted ?

Thanks for the info

It is sighted in at 75 yards to hit just on top of the front sight. If I remember i held out about half of the front sight. I use White Out(the tape kind) to mark it. If it needs adjusted I just take a stiff bristled brush and clean it off and redo it. Kinda like Elmers gold bars, but adjustable and not near as permenent.

Like Dan, not quite 200 yards but at our range we have a "gun rock" that is 2 feet tall and 1.5 feet wide at 150 measured yards. I can hit it 4~5 times with my 9.5" SRH in 44 mag on a good day freehand. Off the bench I can usually hit it with all six. Load is a 240gr Rem SJHP over a medium dose of Blue Dot. Velocity is about 1,325 fps. I have had that gun at the SWPA blast and Blab. I could hit the 200 yard gong half the time freehand. I don't know if it's my most accurate reolver, but it always hits what I aim it at.

I usually get the sights on the target then raise above it to a referance point. I haven't done alot of long range, but it's fun to try it once in a while.

Done mine in SE Kentucky.Everyone else seemed to have tried it so why not me.Tried several loads out of three different 44 mags 200xtp,240jfn nosler,250 partitions, but had the best sucess,i.e. most hits with 320grWFNGC over 20.5H110 out of a 5 1/2 pipe. The wind was a little tough that day and 200 yards was the distance. And sunshine on copper makes it interesting.Don't know that I will do it that much, seemed to me to be expensive, just to say I did it.

The next time that you try the 150 yard target use the sighting method that mellonhead described in his post above. I think that you will like that method

Try getting yourself down to a Metallic Silhouette (Handgun) range. The big bore silhouettes are at 50, 100, 150 and 200 yards. You don't have to get wrapped up in the competition thing. You're there to test your iron sighted shooting skills, not to collect a medal. If you can clear the Rams (200 yrd tgts) then you know you can do it. If you can't then you need to limit your shots to the distance you can be confident of a clean kill. No matter what you'll pick up a lot about how your gun and load shoots at different distances.

Cheers
H

Coyote on a dead run right to left at 115yds with a Reeder 4 5/8 Blackhawk in 475 Linebaugh and 400gr XTP's with a max charge of H110, sight picture was bottom of the front post in the rear sight and a lead of about 3to4 ft and I still hit her in the liver.

200 yds with a 44mag SBH 7.5", shot up my step dads target he was using for his 220 Swift benchrest gun while he took a break. It took two shots to get on target and then the next 4 and 5 out of the following 6 were in a 12"x12" area in the target which screwed with him big time when he looked through his scope the next time. The loads were 240gr bulk hollow points, I believe they were Remington over a max charge of H110.

U know, i bet that if a guy knew the MOA measurements of his front site, he could rangefind and downrange zero with it relative to a ballistics program and make 1st shot connections with it...somewhat...at least i think...maybe...could happen...who knows???

Be an interesting test though...applying tactical, sniper-like systems to an open-sighted handgun, huh? I wonder just how far one could go?

Man, what a great article that would make for!!

BTW, great shot on that coyote Wapiti. Good God, running of all things. Wow!!

200 meters on rams in sillywet is not that big of a deal. i've done it with a 2x scope, but watched others slam em down with open sights.
a game shot is a lil different.... good shootin rod!

Thanks, I forgot to say it was my 3rd shot, the first two she was going straight away and up hill and if I remember correctly I shot behind her once and to the left once so she was really in high gear when I hit her and I was even surprised when she dumped.

If a guy was serious about it and wanted a quick adjustable sight maybe something could be done like the 3 leaf express sights on a rifle. Know what each was sighted in for and throw the leaf up as you raise the gun. It would be a whole lot quicker than adjusting the screw on the rear sight.

S&W had a front sight that you could turn a dial for four height settings. I have seen and handled a few. They were very stiff to turn.

Now mind you I'm not talking about a guy running around with an open sighted revolver just slinging lead at critters out past 100 yards. But taking a few moments to get his bearings pick the right sight and take a competent shot on a critter. All this being said that the shooter had many rounds of practice under his belt. Like KYODE mentioned sillywet shooters are very proficent to 200 meters with open sights.
