I have a new stainless tc contender barrel in 223 (for $168.00 thanks Sportsman Warehouse)that I am trying to get the front site off. One of the screws is stuck. The other came out with much difficulty. It was in with lock-tite. I read somewhere that lock-tite needs to be heated to 500 degrees for removal.

Can I usa a torch or heat gun? Will it effect the barrel?

Any other suggestions?

It depends on whether it's blue or red Locktite as to how hard it will be. Try a heat gun first if you have one. I used a torch on a blued barrel with no problem but not sure about SS. Concentrate the heat where the sight adjoins the barrel. I never use red on guns because of this, but blue usually comes free with a little muscle and without heat.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

A soldiering iron or wood burning iron works great. Just hold it on screw head for about 5-10 min. Will not discolor finish on barrel or sight. If you don't have one you can pick up one a Walmart for less than $15.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

Now that is a good idea! I would have missed that one. Learn something new every day.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Yup, heat will do the job. I had some aluminum tape I picked up somewhere. I wrapped the area around the sight with that to protect the barrel (blued). I used a little pen size propane torch with a very fine tip on it. I kept the flame on the top of the screw. The Loctite seemed to melt and it came out w/o any issues. Before that I almost broke off the screw and it would not budge. I don't know if it was red or blue loctite, it was on a used bbl I picked up in a trade.

Yep, soldering iron works great. If you don't have one, you can grip the proper torx/hex wrench with vise grips, then heat the wrench up to cherry red and press it in the screw head. Use another wrench to loosen because you just annealed the heated wrench.

Another handy tool is a butane pen torch. You can get them at Radio Shack. You can fine tune the tiny flame to a pin point. I've used it for stuck screws and scores of other jobs.

sometimes an easy tap to the butt of the screwdriver while the tip is engaging the screw will brake the Loctite free. I've used the butane pen torch and works great on a barrel that the front sight screws were set using loctite "black". The toughest loctite there is! It is a combo of "super" glue and loctite. It requires 260' F to release. The soldering iron sounds like a great idea, hadn't thought about that one.
