I have a 16"45-70 Encore barrel that I am wanting to use for Elk.I have Rem Brass,300 grain projectiles,Rem for pratice and Nosler Partitions for hunting.Fed 210 primers.I do have the Contender load manual, but am seeking someone with real expierance with using and loading this hoss for duty.from what I have read 1600-1700 fps good for hunting. Is this correct? The intended use for this barrel is on elk in heavy cover possibly no further than 150 yrds.Hopefully 50 to 100 confort zone for this Hoss!Eventually use on Black Bear later on.Any help with data will be awsome and appriceated. Thanks in advance.

HOO HAA Marine Corps!

I had a 45-70 in the Contender and it was like a hammer. TC has told me that I could use the “trapdoor” loading data for the Contender… I was loading a 300gr XTP with H4198 around 1900-2000. In the Encore "TC" stated that I could use any data EXCEPT data for desighned for the Ruger #1.

Hope this helps some...

Duane

I load both 300 gr Hornady JHP and 300 gr Nosler Partitions over H4198 in my 14" (12"+2" brake) Contender barrel. I get 1890 fps from both bullets and excellent accuracy. H4198 gives high velocities with low pressures in the 45-70. H4198s pressures are lower than IMR4198 also. The load I settled on is well below the max listed in Hodgdons data but matches the ballistics of Winchesters Partition and JHP load from a rifle. I'll PM you a copy of my load development sheet since I know some here are tired of seeing it.

Oh, come on PAB1, put that picture of your target on here! One tatered hole ... I think the people who complained are just jelous! TCHUNTER99, I loaded up some rounds using H332. About 51grn was the most accurate if I remember corectley. I am going to try H4198 though. I have not hunted with my 45-70 yet, but plan to this year. I did get my load data from the TC loading manuel.
