am i nuts?.........er what encoredude kept one for a while..........but he did get rid of it hmmmmm whatcya say ccdhowell?..... am i gonna like it?
i done some trading today, and wound up with a 26" blue encore barrel. stopped at a local smith on the way home, and told him to cut her off at 16.5". should get it next week, but not sure when i'll get her to the range.
gonna try the 300mag for my "powerhouse" handgun barrel.
i'll start with some factory loads to begin with. i'm thinkin 180gr..........any recomendations?

i'm not lookin for benchrest accuracy........just minute of elk/deer. when i do get to reloading for it.....i may not even load it to it's full potential. might be kinnda nice to have some throttle left though never know when ya might wanna grab a gear and.... "punch it!"

sometimes i like mild.....n sometimes i like wild

I'm sitting here looking at a 300 Win Mag round (have one in a long gun). That's a lot of case for A LOT of powder. I think your going to like it.

WAY TO GO KYODE!!!!!!!! You're gonna love it. I feel the same as you, I've been playing with lighter loads, but I know I can go heavy when the time is right. I bought some Weighland 180gr bullets over at Midway, they have them on sale. I didn't get the ones listed as "Magnum" I'm afraid they'd be too hard to open on impact at handgun velocities. I like to shoot phone books to collect bullets and see what they've done. At around 1700fps, the Weighland only opened up to about .385; barley even stratched it. I haven't shot it at full velocity, it should do better then, but the lighter stuff us good to practice with. The 300WM is quite a handfull. I'll be nice to compare notes with someone else. I don't get to the range enough, my wife works every-other weekend and I'm babysitter number one with three small daughters. I have some hotter loads in the box, but I guess they'll wait until after deer season because the barrel is zeroed for the slower stuff. I put one of those inexpensive Smith&Wesson 1.5x6 scopes on mine and it handles the recoil fine even with factory 200gr Federal rounds. Nothing in the woods down here big enough to use something like that on though. Maybe Kentucky will start that Elk hunt soon and I'll get up there and use this baby for what it wants to be used for. Now its just a loud toy. I've shot Federal factory 150s and 200s and they are a handfull. Let me know if I'm just a recoil pansy or if that's a real stiff kick in the hand to you too.
Congrats again--------------------shoot on!

a loud toy........that may be mine's description for a while. maybe next season i'll try it out on a deer.

they are havin elk hunts now! i think they draw for 38 tags now. an increase from previous years. they must be doin good. you have to apply by june-july, i think

I've never been an accuracy buff. I'm happy at 3" at 100yds and I can get that for the first two or three groups. This barrel takes a lot of concentration to shoot well because of the monster hit you have to endure when you pull the trigger...........gotta get the mind right. Lest I do. Maybe I'm a recoil wennie.

The 300 KI Mag!! I like it.

Just don't keep the 300 KI near the 30-30 AI, might cause sparks in the gun cabinet!!

Well Ole Buddy, I just knew you were going to have one in the end. Congrats. Let's see, I have think I have a preferred load around here someplace that we loaded for my buddy when he went to Alaska for Moose. Oh I remember it was a 200gr. Nosler Partition loaded with Hodgdon H-1000. Yep I'll bet that load would get your attention, I know it sure got my attention in that Synthetic Stocked Remington 700. Come to think of it, I'd probably rather shoot it out of a Handgun.

Good luck with the new barrel. Na you ain't gonna neglect any of your barrels, you just gotta buy more Deer Tags.

Larry

Yep, while you're waiting for ammo, scope, mounts etc you better send her off to The Gun Garage for a face lift.
