Hello to all,
Just came over from long rangehunting.com. Just got into the pistol game I think I might have the bug. Just bought a xp100r at a estate auction in 22-250 which should be perfect for a hang it out the truck window and shoot something kind of rig. I need glass. Some of you are running rifle scopes on these. Should I be looking at a rifle scope or a pistol scope. Which of each is better for handgun hunting. I have good glass on my rifles NF and US optics and Nikons and some Mark 4s. I also have a EER 2.5-8 leupold on my Anshults 17hmr pistol. How much power do I need for this set up. Coyotes ground hogs ect. REsted position of course. Very little target shooting but some maybe longer range varmints. 300-400 yds. I want to be able to go to the field and shoot this thing calling as well. What say the experts?

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

Todd,
1st, Welcome to HH.
Second, I would ask, what type of shooting or shooting positions do you expect to be in?
A 22-250 won't have much recoil. I would try both your handgun scopes and one of your rifle scopes with this XP and then decide which one you are more comfortable with. If you brake this barrel it would easily work with a rifle scope.

Welcome Todd!!

I have a rifle scope on many of the small caliber guns. In the Encore I have a rifle scope on a 218 BEE, and a 223 barrel. I have a rifle scope on a 221 Fire Ball XP100, and one on a Striker in 243. I can shoot all but the 243 with full field of view. The 243 is very accurate with the rifle scope. I just acquire the taget and then pull my head back keeping the crosshairs on the traget until the field of view closes in to about half.

I have plans for a rifle scope on a 22-250 barrel and a 204 barrel for the Encore.

Ok next question. How is this thing gonna shoot with the factory tube? Is this gonna be a 1/2 moa gun or should I expect more. I will probably just ring it out a little with some factory shells to get some brass and play with it some. I still dont know what to do about the scope. I would also like a better stock. Does someone make a better stock for this setup. I think the problem is that it is a r model instead of the regulare single shot. I dont see many stocks for it?

TC,
Two choices and one caution:
1.Rifle scope......huge port job!
2.Pistol with high dollar scope...stay with original rig.
Caution:Most States allow hunting from truck/car if vehicle is registered as HANDICAP

Don't know if follow hunter(s) can stay in vehicle while shot being taken? I'll ask LEO up the street just how far fellow (License????) hunter(s) can standby to assist bringing in the game?

Always hard to say when dealing with factory barrels-It can be a sub-quarter rig to one MOA.
Scott McRee makes an all aluminum stock and Joel Russo also has some laminated stocks that would work with your XP.
Here is a pic of one of Scott's stocks:
I would try the rifle scope on the XP with out a brake-Give yourself some room like Tigger said to see how much movement it has. you may decide to use a LER not because of safety issues with a rifle scope, but that the LER may just be better suited for what you want. you won't really know until you try both.

The stocks that Russo makes can work with either the xp-100R or the original-I would contact him and talk to him about that.
As far as which rear grip stock I prefer it partially, depends on why I am getting it.
My two main uses is either BR shooting or field shooting.
If I want one that works for both, I would go with the McRee for sure. It is a completely modular system.

The XP100R is usually very accurate. It's the Remington Model 7 action. Factory ammo should be good, but I'm sure the groups will shrink as you taylor a load for it when handloading.

The rear grip with a bipod on the front will be haevy and recoil should not be too much for the rifle scope if you take care to keep the eye back just a little. A break on the 22-250 will help some but in my opnion adds more noise than it's worth to tame a small amount of recoil. I'm shooting a center grip Striker in 243 with 75-80gr pills and no break. The 22-250 has less powder capacity and the bullets will not be that heavy.
