Do you prefer to hunt with a revolver or a Specialty Pistol or do you use both ? And why ? And please no bashing.

Why not both if you can swing it (not at the same time of course). Each will have advantages and disadvantages. It also comes down to what your intentions are. I like hunting with revolvers for small game due to the fact I'm usually a little closer and have faster follow up shots and my TC for bigger game that are far off. Thats my answer hope it helps.

The big wheels will reach out and drop big game at considerable distances and will scare the living hell out goons slipping around your home WITHOUT firing a shot. But if you must fire in self defense, the more the merrier! Therefore, for combining hunting with personal defense I choose the wheel. Oh yeah, they are also acceptable in Illinois for hunting unlike most SPs, so another MAJOR reason for the wheel.

Get BOTH!!!
\:\)

I like to hunt with both. Just depends on what I'm hunting and what distance the quarry is at.

All the white tail deer I have taken have been with revolvers as our woods are thick and the shots are under 100 yards.

When I'm hunting charlies I like to stretch the distance some so the SP's are usually the choice. But it's still fun to hunt the hedgerows with a revolver for fast shooting when you come up on a charlie at short range.

I always carry a revolver on my belt, along with my SP riding either in a shoulder rig or on a single point sling. When we decide to do a little woodswalking I can leave the SP at the truck and still be adequately armed while moseying around in the bush. I am comfortable shooting 100 yards or so with my 41 or 45, but we do get presented with some much longer opportunities when on post. I even pack a 3rd now and again, a .22 for grouse and vermin. The more the merrier ;-)

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

It doesn't matter, once you get the bug you cant stop. One or twenty whats the difference? If you get a wheel gun you will want to explore different models and cartridges. If you get a Contender you will go broke buying 150.00 barrels off of Gunbroker.
Take your pick at what to get first, but you will have most of them in the end any way.

Revolvers force you to get closer, and thats why i started handgun hunting anyway. It WILL make you learn to be a better hunter!!! Thats my vote!!!

Great response! I like to see the cold air leaving a whitetail's nostrils, also. As I get older, bowhunting is becoming a little more difficult--thus the handgun. However, I used to say that handgunning was the next best thing to bowhunting--now it's vice versa. Still have to practice alot, still have to get the animals (a little
;\)
closer, and practice good scent control. The shorter blood trails are a HUGE factor. Handgunning is now #1 for me over stick-slinging.

I own and use both. Both have their place in a 'handgunner's battery'. IMO

It's not the gun, but the man behind it.

Personally I prefer wheel guns. I like a handgun that fits in a holster. I like having the ability to squeeze off 5-rounds before reloading. If I need to take a really long shot, I'll use a rifle. I like up-close and personal -- but that's just me.

X2... When you can start complimenting them and their abilities it is a well matched pair.

I shoot and enjoy both SS and revolvers for hunting.

I like the handling qualities and portability of a revolver, and I get a bigger rush when I take a game animal with one.........
But I will grab a SS in a NY minute if the job calls for it.

I have both...and use both. In fact, I harvested two deer in one day during the last season. The kills were about five minutes apart using a XP-100 for the first and a RSBH Hunter for the second.

Had I been armed with just a revolver the first shot would not have been possible within my comfort zone...it was around 150yds. The XP .300 Savage dropped it. Several minutes later I dropped the second deer at 30-ish yards with the revolver.

Both, depending upon the game, the locale, and my mood.

As far as I am concerned, when you can get good with a revolver a bolt or singleshot becomes a whole another ball game. My children will probably start out shooting 22LR out of a revolver for their first handgun. When it is time, they will move up to a 7 ½ SBH 4 Mag for deer and pig hunting. But that is JMHO…

I use both and 99% of the time I carry both. I always have my belt gun and will carry either a Contender or a long barreled revolver depending on where I plan on hunting. The odd man out is usually in the truck in case plans change.

I utilize both. SP for long shots and the wheelgun for close up (75 yds and under).

I like the wheel guns in the 44's and 45's however you can't beat a ssp in a good long range caliber. I have both but most of the ssp are set up for long range and the wheel guns are set up for 100 yds or less.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I`ve hunted with revolvers for over 25 years but last year had the opportunity to hunt ibex in the Texas hill country and purchased a 14" 6.5 because I knew if a shot came it would be most likely be out of the range of my revolvers. Its the same as with hunting rifles, a 30-30 lever action is great for the eastern woods but its better to have something like a 270 for the open plains of the west. The gun and cartridge should match the game.
PS never got a shot at an ibex

When I'm hunting whitetail I just carry my scoped 357 maximum Contender. When hawg hunting I have the Contender but also have my 357 mag on my hip in case a group of them wants to come see me after my initial shot. I recommend having both and letting the situation help you decide what to carry.
