What say you all about a 357 mag as a backup gun while bear or hog hunting?
Good choice?
Better then a big stick?
Use what you have?
Or if you need a back up gun things are or about to get real ugly fast need a weapon that hits hard and 357 mag is on the light side?

Better than a big stick. Be sure to file the front site down smooth with the barrel.

I'd take a .357 anyday!!! I load with 200 gn hard cast and my barrel is only 4 inches. I would think any critter would feel the burn with every pull of the trigger!!!

These questions are always fun.

1. If danger ever comes around, it is definately unexpected. For certain it has caught you off guard. A backup gun for bear or hogs would mean you are possibly closer than you had planned, for me I would let the 357 rip!

2. Any headshot will change a man or animals attitude quickly!

Smith & Wesson used to make a three inch magnaported 44mag called the Magnum packer. They nwent so far as to put a bears head on the right hand side pannel. If this wasn,t available I would not hesitate usung a .357 with 180 or 200 grain bullets.

If the 357 is what you already have, I'd use it. However if you're starting from scratch with a new purchase, I'd opt for something "heavier". Probably the 44 or 45 Ruger Alaskan.

I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a handgun today.

How big are the bears? If you can shoot it accurately, in a hurry, it is way better than a big stick. If your bears are particularly big I might suggest a bigger gun. I usually pack a 4-5/8" Blackhawk in .41 mag as a backup, but then our bears aren't real big.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

The bears where we hunt are the small brown bear type of the coast of Alaska.....
OK not Alaska but east Tennessee black bears..

180 or 200 gr cast, heavy dose of H110 and get after 'em.

I have all the faith on the earth in the .357's ability to stop a bad guy DRT (Dead Right There) with 125 gr. hollow points. Whenever I have carried my GP 100 afield it has been stoked with 180 gr. Castcores. At close range (I mean close) I believe that I could DRT most things that would have a mind to eat me with those heavy bullets put through the skull.

I do hunt deer and black bear with a .44 Magnum, so would have little need to carry the .357 as well.
But, I have been known to carry the GP 100 while scouting my usual deer haunts, or bird hunting the north northern woods of New Hampshire, prime moose and bear country

I thnk it would be 'okay' as an emergency back-up as long as it was of 6-shot variety so you can shoot 5 at teh bear and save one for 'just before teh final crunch'!! IMHO-the 357 is under rated at times and over rated at others. I had a deer drop on the shot with a 357 170 Sierra JHC but had deer run off with a 44 mag and 180 JHC's. I thnk adrenaline on the animals part was mostly to blame. If it was all I had I'd carry it, but I would sleep well in grizzly country if it was all I had!! Hogs is not a big deal to me. I've never had any trouble killing them with bow or handguns. Never been attacked by one either.

In Texas the hog hunting rule for the .357 is that it will kill a hog, but he might not know he's dead. Watch out for that. I saw a 400 pounder take one very poor glancing shot from a 30-06 after killing 2 dogs, chase me and a friend back to the truck, pop both passenger side tires, absorb 6 .357 soft points fired from standing inside the pickup bed, then run about 30 yards towards the brush before expiring. I've also seen one .357 hydra shock knock a 315lb boars brain out threw his chin. It just depends on what you mean by backup. In the last 10 years I have had to defend myself from wounded hogs twice. Once in the incident above and once the year before last while turkey hunting(.41 mag). Most of the time I carry a 9mm auto or .22mag revolver as a backup specifically for finishing a crippled animal. Its a pretty safe bet that's all a man will ever need. But if you are talking about defending yourself in the brush from an angry porker, I would say as long as you are confident what you are packing will break massive bones use it.

I just got through chasing a wounded and pissed off boar through a North Carolina swamp and he wasn't all that impressed with my .44 mag. I would say the .357 is marginal. Able? Definitey, but it doesn't leave much margin of error. Get a .44 or better yet a .45 and you will be in good shape. JMHO.

If all I could get was a 357 magnum then I guess that is what I would use, but there is better. Personally I would consider a 44 Magnum the minium and would feel much better with my 4 3/4" 454 and heavy bullet.

Well if the long gun didn't do it, there's a big problem that most handguns won't be any better at. Personally, in a sef defense scenarion, I am going to use my .45 to fight my way to my AR!! Sort of like not taking a knife to gun fight. I still don't think a heavy loaded .44 or 45LC in a big Ruger is too bad for a back-up. My 300lb'er in Tennessee fell to a 350gr cast semi wadcutter from a 15" Encore 45-70 at ~65 yards---squealed and died on the spot. It is not moving any faster than my 285's from my 8 3/8 Smith.

Well, I don't personally think my handguns are giving anything up to my rifles. I have shot lots of game with my .416 Remington, and it's my .475 Linebaugh that seems to get their attention more. I am not a muzzle energy believer, but I do believe in large diameter, heavy for caliber flat-nosed bullets. They penetrate with aplomb, and with their size, they make a sizeable wound channel.

They have got some pigs on the north end of the Outer Banks. Very close to the state line of VA. Pretty fun hunting in the sand. Nothing can hear you walking.

Lots of farms where I hunted and therefore loads of hogs! I'll post up a full hunting report tonight, as I hunted with nothing but revolvers.
