if the barrel was clean and had been oiled that would be the most common cause although I have seen barrels sensitive enough that the heat from just one round can change the point of impact.

Never go hunting with a clean barrel. I always check sight-in before the hunt and leave the barrel as the last group fired. There'll time 'nuff for cleanin' when the hunt is done ;-)

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Could it possibly have been the round fired? As for keeping a dirty barrel...that would be up to you.

With enough practice and careful notes you should be able to predict where you're ccb shot will go.

What caliber were you shooting? I know I have caught myself flinching before. Only once and the sun was in my eyes ... Just kidding.

Not to infer that a person should not clean their barrel. I have just made a habit of leaving the barrel fouled from the last session prior to the hunt (1-2 weeks) to eliminate any question of where that first next one will hit.

It is good to clean ;-)

s4s4u, I do the same thing. My T/C Contender with the 22lr match barrel is very finicky when it comes to a clean vs fowled barrel. At 25 yards, it will throw a round as much as 4" off, with a clean barrel. After a couple fowler rounds down the tube, it'll fine it's mark. My other guns aren't as bad as that one, but I always make sure I have a fowled barrel before I go to the woods.

I pull a dead chicken through my barrels to "fowl" them....

J/K. Like the others have stated, it is not uncommon for the first shot to go outside the group. Usually this is due to a "clean" barrel or oil left in the bore. Sometimes just passing a couple of dry patches through will fix it, sometimes it takes a fouling shot or two. When I shot silhouette all the time I cleaned the barrels thoroughly after each match and left a light film of oil in them. The day of the next match I sprayed some brake cleaner down the bores and the first shots were close enough not to matter. YMMV.

.

Based on total trigger pull weight, my trigger finger has lifted well over 200 tons....

I'll have to try the dead chicken...it may be easier than a live one...LOL

I always clean my bore good a week or so before season and then go out and fire a couple fouling shots, I do this on all my guns. If during the season I need to wipe it out because of moisture or debri I always take a bore snake with me and run it through dry unless it's real bad and then I'll put a little break free on the snake and go fire another fouling shot.

Those first shots can get a little twitch just before firing! What were you sighting in?

not really sure about the dirty barels, but I do think that the first shot is different from any consecutive shots because of the cold barrel. Once the barrel heats up if will expand minutely and will give you a different point of impact.
