I am relatively new to long range pistol shooting. I bought a 460 S&W Encore barrel back in February. Also recently got a 22 LR barrel to making the cost of shooting a little cheaper. Recently I been practicing with the 22 LR, and a little 460, at 50 and 100 yards with my shooting sticks in a kneeling or sitting position to prepare for the up coming deer firearm season in PA.
I am interested in your opinion on how to practice and what game you hunt. Please let me know.

I practice at a variety of ranges for deer and my good friend and hunting partner has a tree stand on his property. We set up targets at various distances and difficulties, and shoot them off of the stand. It is the best practice in my opinion. I also shoot targets off-hand at 100 yards -- it has really sharpened up my shooting.

I used to have access to a large quantity of empty 1 gallon milk jugs. I would fill up about 20 with water and set up 2 or 3 at a time out at 100 yards and shoot offhand. It was more fun than paper targets and still great practice for technique and form! Plus ... all of the weeds got plenty of water! ;-)

I practice from a wide variety of shooting positions that mimic anything I might expect to encounter while hunting. I also try and set up so I won't have any longer a shot than necessary. 50-75 yards is about optimal in the Eastern woodlands in my opinion. I also shoot offhanded at targets a lot.

I practice on charlies all summer long. Long range guns from bi-pods, shooting stix, and shooting bags. Revolvers are used while stalking hedgerows.
We also have steel gongs at the range out to 150 yards. Great practice also.

I practice with the rest I use when hunting, as I shoot a M.O.A. .350 Rem mag. I sight in at 3" high at 100 yards and that makes it 7" low at 300, which is the range I shoot most of my deer. My longest kill is 440 yards, probably will be my longest ever.

I practice out to 100 but hunt places that usually limit my shots to 5oyrds and under.have someone else set your targets up so you don't know the distances.I shoot skeet off forked sticks.Practice and work up the distances as you go.
