So Im loading up some new 44 Mag hardcast for my September Idaho elk hunt and I'm not sure how fast I need to push em. They are 335 grain gas checked bullets. With 296, My handloads have chrony'd 1240-1400 FPS. I want to load 100-150 for pre-season practice and havent setteled on a load yet. Anyone have any Idea what kind of speed it will take to make sure they will go all the way through both shoulders of a big bull????

What part of "shall not be infringed" do they not understand

I would think if you kept the distance in prespective, something in the 1300 fps would serve the purpose.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

I agree, 1,300 would work really well.

Cub, As the members said above, keep the distance short and the bullet at 1300FPS MV and it should work out fine.Good luck,JFS

1300 is plenty!!! Heavy hardcast bullets always surprise me by penetrating far further than I would have guessed.

I agree with azBear. I have never recovered a 44 LSWC from a deer but never shot an Elk with one. In fact, I shot a woodchuck from behind a wrecked 56 Ford front wheel (not tire) and didnt recover a bullet, but there was a clean hole through the wheel and chuck!
I find that in 41 mag,45LC, or 44 mag, LSWC's kill nicely. I don't think there's alot that would stop my ,500 with a 440LSWC at 1650fps!
