whoops! I had to go back and read, I gotcha now! I'm really not trying to discourage your judgement in what you use. I just know the feeling of making that perfect shot and end up with nothing, it sucks! Not sure how you or your wife handle that. I usually am pretty successful at taking game. More than I like to admit, I have not gotten some that should have been got!

p.s. You are a lucky man to even get your wife out there!!

a few years back oregon banned anything smaller than .25 for deer or elk but because of back lash the changed it to .22 centerfire for deer, antelope, cougar and bear and .24 cal for elk and sheep but I think bear should be on that because in my opinion anyone that goes bear hunting with a .22 cal needs to spend some time in a padded room especially in a state where 300+ pounders are pretty common and 500+ are taken every year. I know alot of guys that use 22-250's for deer and a couple use them or .243 for elk and bear but I would never recommend either. the 223 and 22-250 are varmint rounds, the 243 is a small to medium game round and I think that's where they should stay, just because something will do the job doesn't mean it should be used to do the job.

thanks for all the input. never said she was going to use it, just wanted to know if anybody else has used the 223 to tkae deer sized game with the 223. probably going to invest in a larger caliber with a break for her.she really enjoys handguns more then rifes. she doesnt even like the recoil of the 243 out of a youth rifle.i do have a 30-30 barrel i could have ported and see how that works out.

Most points made pro or con I can live with. Is it the ideal round to hunt with... prob not. Will it work and work well for some...yep. I have taken many deer with a 223 or 223AI shooting 62gr Barnes TSXs. NEVER had a problem. Most are DRT when hit properly. Most shots are high shoulder or occasionally double lunged.

Will I let my 10 y/o hunt with one of my 223s? Nope. At a minimum he uses a 243. I'm a big 25 cal fan. I'm just getting into the handgun thing. (THANKS KRAL! You are costing me plenty) That being said, I will own a 250 SAV or 250AI soon. 100gr TSXs should be a great potent round with mild recoil.
