Ok,
Been lurking for awhile and I now have a question of import that I need a little help with. I have been looking for a 480 Ruger to buy for a while and am faced with two choices.
1. Pawnshop 480 SRH that has about 100 rds thru it, comes with the box, rings, 40 rds of loaded ammo, 20 rds of brass and new Hornady 4-Die set.
Price $ 850 firm
2. Retail store (Fred Meyers, a Kroger subsidary) NIB .480 SRH
Price $720
As I have a total of $875 saved (took 3 years...whew..lol), option 2 allows me to order a Lee hand press and dies for both my .44 magnum and the .480
My wife says the "new gun has better karma than a pawnshop gun..."
Any and all advice is appreciated,
thx

Welcome tdog49! I would get the new for sure. I mean you get to break it in and all. You'll know for sure what has been shot through it. And most importantly, your wife said so!! Good luck

Both are waaaay overpriced. You should be able to find new for around $600 on-line. I recently "won" a lightly used one on AuctionArms for $446 with box, rings and manual. Another by the same seller sold for $406 on GunBroker. Shop around and be patient, or try to negotiate with your current options. There are a lot of slightly used in the $500 range out there.
Rod, too.

The pawn shop deal is over-priced IMO. The NIB SRH isn't over the top. Keep in mind the fact that they are no longer produced, and hvingowned a couple and searched for more than a few, even used it's getting harder to find them for under 600 bucks.

I agree with s4s4u. If you can, be patient. I've seen field grade FA 83's go for those prices, on GunBroker and they're way more "catillac" than a Ruger, if you know what I mean.

I agree with the others that both are over priced. If you are determined to get one of them, I would go with the new gun. If you like SA handguns, you might look into a .480/.475 BFR in this price range also. Is either Redhawk a 5 shot or are they both 6 shot cylinders?
BTW, welcome to the site!

Welcome. If Fred Meyer has a lay away plan go put it on there while you take some time to look around. You might and probably will find a better deal.

When searching auctions enter both the number and decimal versions, IOW, 480 Ruger as well as .480 Ruger. Often guns will show up one way but not the other.
Oh, and forgot to say, WELCOME tdog
Rod, too.

Good karma too you!!
Don't feel bad about dry firing at anything that moves, it's good practice. I do it all the time watching TV. You might want to draw the curtins if you live in town so the neighbors don't get concerned.
I love my 480.

Congrats on your SRH. The 480 is a great round.
Unfortunately the only current model Ruger 480 you can buy now is the #1S single shot rifle in 475L/480R. What's the deal with that; pretty sure that won't set the sales charts afire. Not that it would have saved the round necessarily, but they should have found a way to get it into their single action line, perhaps in a 5-shot.
I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a handgun today.

I called and asked Ruger why the .480 was discontinued and they said it was a marketing decision. They just didn't sell enough of them to justify producing them, evidently.
