I just wanted to know if anyone has a 460 rowland and has any personal experience hunting with it. Any specifics...animal, range, circumstances, or just general observations. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Gadrooning,

I've got 2 460 Rowlands, one a limited edition Dan Wesson revolver in 5" and a conversion kit placed in a Kimber Super Match. For whitetail, I have used the WW 230 JHP, a 'healthy' dose of Accurate #7, Starline brass, WW LP primer. I've taken two whitetail doe with the revolver, single shots, one a quartering to the right at 35 yards, the other, shoulder on broadside at 15 yards moving. Neither traveled more than 5 yards after being hit. I shot a buck at 26 yards in the brisckit, head on, dropped on strike, with the Kimber. Bullet penetration was excellent as was expansion of the bullet from the quartering doe and the head on buck.

Doc thanks for the info. Exactly what I wanted to hear. I was wondering if the rowland was going to be limited to broadshots. Much appreciated. Do you use a scope set up on your Kimber, and if so what are you using? I also have a rowland setup on a Kimber. Thinking about putting a scope mount and red dot on it. Any suggestions.

Gad,

Open irons on both guns. I think the like the Burris Fastfire may or may not stand up to the recoil impulse; however, Gary or others on the site have more experience with those than I do.

Hello, I don't have one personally but my buddy converted his 1911 to 460 Rowland. He hasn't hunted with it but I tested it with wet news print and compared it to 44 mag bullets as well as 454's. The lighter 180 grain bullets he bought already loaded (I think they are noslers) fragmented pretty quickly so I handloaded some 230 grain xtp's and they did well. I chronographed them at 1300 fps using hodgdon long shot powder. They expanded to .70 inches and retained about 80-85% of their weight. Based on comparison with 44's I'd say that they are twins if like bullets are used. Oh the 1911 has the standard 5" barrel, hope this helps a little.

I can't speak to the durability of the Burris but the JP Enterprises and Trijicon are very tough.

are any of these able to mount on the 1911 "reliably" without taping into the slide or frame? I keep considering a scope but It just feels wrong to punch holes in a perfectly good gun.

Sorry a 460 Rowland is not in the same power class as a 454. A 454 has more energy at 100 yards than the 460 Rowland does at the muzzle. It's still fine at limited range for deer.

About the only way to do it would be to replace the rear sight with a base designed to fit. I've seen Glocks outfitted this way and I did that on one of my 22's.
