Hello everyone! I recently graduated from a 44 mag and purchased a 454 Ruger SRH with 7.5" barrel. I decided to put a luepold 2x scope on it. I shot a 1.3" 25 yard group, 2.3" group at 50 yards, and a 4" group at 100 yards. All were 3 shots at a time. I am using handloaded 250 grain barnes xpb's chronographed at 1,580 fps. Are these groups good? I am new to longer range handgun shooting/hunting and was wondering if I am doing all right compared to others. I realize everyone is different but I'm just trying to get a feel for what's possible!

There's nothing wrong with those groups and that's very good shooting to boot, especially with a 2x scope.

Thanks Gary! No one I know is into big bore handgun shooting so I have no one to compare myself too. Competition breeds improvement!

Sounds like you have it 'dialed in'!

I agree, that is a very respectable group and probably what I average but with time and lots of rounds down range you might be surprised at what a short barrel is capable of. This is my best group @ 100yds with my 6" 475 with a 2X Leupold: 5 shots 1.5" 3 shots .65"

Very impressive! I hope my Ruger is even capable of that.

I found I can improve my groups by fine tuning my aiming point even with a 2X. If I am shooting at an orange dot I will aim at the edge of the circle instead of the middle.

I think it is and that is fine shooting!!! My 44 SRH will shoot very well and from what I have heard about other SRH’s, I just think you haven’t found “your” SRH's sweet spot for 100 yards paper shooting. HOWEVER... I don’t think a deer would know the difference. LOL I also think those groups would shrink quite a bit with more magnification.

Those groups Rod is shooting are not easy with a revolver IMHO. Particularly with a 2X scope.

good idea thank you. I was thinking about using one of the small orange target stickers on a black target, that may help too.

x2 On what elkbelch said
@100yds I use a 3" dot with the 2X scope and shoot at the bottom edge of the dot.
Any smaller dot is covered by the cross hair depending on the scope @100yds

@50 I go to the 2" dot

On my T/C's with the 2-7X I use the 1" dot at 100yds

By the way all my wheel guns have the 2x for those up close shots if I can hit a 4" Skeet on a stake 6 out of 6 times I feel sure I can hit a deer size target at 100yds with good shot placement every time.

Look at the photos of the hogs I shot in Pearl River both of those were @ 85 yds and were perfect shots (Little luck lots of shooting)

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Thank you for the target sizing, less trial and error for me! Very impressive pictures, November needs to hurry and get here so I can post pictures of my first antelope taken with a wheel gun. *crosses fingers*

Sounds like your shooting very well! The only thing I would add is to get in as much practice as you can from field shooting positions. If you have not read it yet, check out Garys article Field Shooting Positions That Work under the Member Articles/Getting Started section. Good luck!
