After many years of pursuing bear and having a few opportunities that I passed on I finally put one down. A week and a half ago I headed into the high country for yet one more attempt at a september bear. I arrived at camp at 10:30 dumped out my pack then hiked up to a ridge 30 minutes from camp where I spotted a nice brown phase bear at 226yds but despite my efforts to close the gap he wandered to the far end of the meadow 275yds away and was gone. At another slope I saw a blackie moving thru the berries and brush at 250 yds but it never showed up for the dance. So back to camp to set up my tent and get a short nap then its back up to the ridge at 5:45. Not 5 minutes later there is a dark brown bear right below me at 75yds mowing down berries like theres no tomorrow which happened to be true. I quickly removed my pack and found a solid rest on the rocky cliff and settled the cross hairs on its left shoulder as it was facing uphill and away from me. At the shot the bear started rolling sideways and rolling and rolling and rolling Finally to stop at the bottom of the slope 75yds below. It took an hour to gut it and bone out the 2 hind quarters then make my way to camp before dark. At 8:00 the next morning I returned to finish the job then climb the 150yds up the 35 degree slope returning to camp by 10:15 to rest and reorganize my gear for the first of two trips out to my truck completing the haul out at 4:30.

My hunting partner had to bag out 2 days before the hunt so I wasn't expecting to do all the hauling boy o boy what a wake up call when you sling that 70-80lb pack on your back.
