Currently, there are 2 Encores from different sellers on GunBroker. One is chambered for 416 Rigby, the other is 416 Rem mag. Are these beasts presently owned by someone on this list? Both are "braked"; however, I expect recoil to be "monstrous!" Any input?

Doc

Doc,

I have shot regularly the 460 S & W and 30-06 in Encore pistol with no brakes. I have also shot the 500 S & W in a S & W 12 inch revolver and stated that it was not too bad.

WOW! This one makes me think about the video the guy shooting the 600 Nitro Encore pistol and the recoil sends it flying back over his head.

I would definitely asking the seller alot of questions on the recoil of this gun and why he is selling it. I would even ask the owner if he knows anyone with a comparable handgun.

Good Luck !

I have a Contender in 416JDJ with the Super Arrestor and its not bad. I also have an Encore in 50 Alaskan that looks exactly like the 416 Rigby pictured. If you push the velocity up on it the recoil can become brutal. I attribute that to the fact that bullet weight is much higher with the 50.

I have a .416 Remmie, and it is a handful to shoot from a rifle platform (it only weighs 8-lbs). Should be a handful even with a brake!

I've sent the seller of the 416 Rigby Encore no less than 4 messages ( maybe 5 or 6, lost track )with questions and he hasn't responded to one of them. Makes me a bit leary when someone can't or won't answer questions about something they're selling. I would think the recoil with factory level loads would be well betond any 460 or 500 S&W loads.

Recoil will be heavy considering the encore is light weight and has a rear grip. If you want an encore in something super strong and not foolish the 416 JDJ, 416 Barnes, or on the very upper scale a 416 Taylor. All of these would still require a brake.

The 416 Taylor works well in the Encore if you set it up correctly and that's with a full-bull barrel and big break. This is the one I used in Africa built up by SSK. Doc Rogers also used the Taylor from SSK to shoot buffalo and I think a few others. You're right if the guy isn't responding to questions that's big red flag.

No two ways around it Doc, the recoil on a 416 Rigby can be BRUTAL. I have a Holland fishgill brake on my 16" Encore and can shoot a dozen or so if i use teh frame with rubber grips. Wood grips hurts and it's tough to stay in the hand, but I have small hands. DanB et al have shot mine at the SWPA Handgun shoot. Two hands off the bench can hammer the 200yrd with no problem. I shoot loads from an old Speer manual using either the 350 Speer or Barnes TSX over 103-107 H4831sc and they zip out from 2300 2400fps. The 350 Speer is at the slower end which I expected. Remeber, this is a big case and pressures have to be kept at factory numbers to be safe in teh Encore. I think teh 416 Taylor would be a more efficient and cheaper way to go for teh same or better performance. Anyway you look at it, any of the 416's are tank killers.

The 416 Rigby looks like it has a barrel shorter than 15". Recoil would be on the stout side but with a barrel that short you would be limited to the velocities you could generate as only so much powdder would burn in the barrel. Case in point my 500 S&W uses 26.5gr behind a 440gr boolit and gets 1500fps out of a 12.5" Encore Bbl.(15" loa w/brake). If I load 34.0gr same powder, same boolit I get only 1625fps. If I shoot the heavier load out of my 15" Encore Bbl. I get 1850fps. (and a heck of alot more recoil).

WOW!!! Well not only will they both knock your teeth out but bullets are SUPER expensive. You are talking like $200 for a box of 416 rigby and $100 for the 416 rem mag unless you handload them. Its still going to be expensive! I would also say that muzzle flash is going to be pretty bad also. All of the powder isnt going to burn in a 15" barrel. I would listen to Franchise and something like the Barnes and Taylor would be cool.

CashMoney is right, the powder not burning in a short barrel causing there to be less recoil is an interesting point of view. Consider HOW MUCH MORE the short barreled 500 S&W kicks than one w/ 10" or more barrel. The weight of a longer barrel should actually help control recoil.

I work will a lady whos father in law fractured his wrist after shooting the snub nosed variety of the 500 S&W. The same guy had no problems w/ recoil from the 8 3/8 " barrel version. Another .416 choice could be a 416/348.

Doc,

I have both in sixteen inch barrels, the 416 Remington seems to have a sharper recoil than the 416 Rigby I also have a 416 Taylor that
one is sweet to shoot compared to the other two.
