I'm new to handgun hunting. Can someone suggest a good set of shooting sticks? And, any other gear, gadgets that might be nice to have?

I personally like the Stony Point steady stix for the sitting position because they fold up to about 12". A lot of folks on here have just made their own including myself. For stand up shooting I have a set of bamboo 3-legged variety. For more information check out this article.

I made my own. 2 arrows, 2 field points, and 8" of 3/8" gas line. Just spread the stix in or out for height adjustment. Light weight and inexpensive.

I have the Stoney point and like it alot. I also just picked up the Primos trigger stick (short dually) for sitting or kneeling and it looks like it is going to work really well. It is heavy though if you do alot of stalking, but is perfect for sitting with your back against a tree. If the terrain is right I still use my old creedmore position with my TC's and Encores, but it doesnt worrk for revolvers.

I really like the Bog-Pod shooting sticks and Pro-Aim 3/4 finger shooting gloves.

I just got one of those as well, should be great on stand but not as portable as my Explorer monopod for on the go. I also have a set of stix I made from an old popup tent poles, works great when sitting but for all around I'll tote my momopod as it adjusts from 2' to 6' with a twist of the wrist and makes a nice walking staff as well.

I use a Bog-Pod bipod. Also have a monopod (can't remember which brand) but I like the bipod better. Much more stable.

Got a Stoney Point. Very lightweight and easily adjustable.

Stoney Point as well.

Good to have you here. I made my own bi-pod and tri-pod. out of 1/2 inch wood dowel rods. The bi-pod is 36 in. long and the tri-pod is 45 in. long. I use the tri-pod for the first 2 days of deer season here in Pa. when I am sitting all day. I use the bi-pod when I am still hunting. You can't fold it but it is very light weight.

Shooting sticks junky here...I have the collapsible Steady Stix for sitting and stowed in my pack, the Explorer Monopod which I have currently partnered with the Bipod for ground blind work, and just got in the Bog-Pod CLD for shooting standing and my ground blinds with higher windows.

All have a purpose and specialty, but the Bog-Pod appears to be really well made and of great quality. Have not gotten a chance to use it in the field.

For those whom use these with revolvers where do you place the gun? I have always set the frame on the "V" but I see in some photos on this sight where guys set the barrel on the support. I thought that was taboo due to the bullet traveling down the barrel. Comments????

I believe that is when the "P" word comes into play. Practice with the set-up to see where the gun shoots when touching the rest in various places. I believe that different guns and different loads will dictate what part of the gun should or can be rested in the "V".

I set the barrel in the "V", for me it seems more stable.

I rest mine just in front of the trigger guard. With as much effort as is put into free floating barrels and glass bedding and etc with firearms, resting a gun on the barrel, even a handgun, just doesn't make sense to me.

I sometimes use a folding tri-pod thats gives a steady rest with no fore or aft movement, but I have to watch where I place my revolver because the cylinder can get wedged between the sticks and becomes very hard to cycle.

Exactly my point. Thanks.

I have used a stoney point pole cat. Taken 2 elk with a handgun and 4 whitetail with a rifle using this stick. It is durable and a great hiking stick. Its great for difficult stalks.

I also use the stoney point pole cat system. I have both the short and medium length sticks. I really like them.

I like the short primos trigger dual sticks because I can leave my gun resting on them and adjust them up and down easily. I have not used them with a pistol but have taken a few deer with a rifle using the single and the bipod.

Mossback Tripod stick is my favorite.

kingfisher,

the Mossback tripod looks very interesting. Given it's priced about half of the cost for the Bog-pod tripod, it could be great value. How do you consider the difference in support as well as flexibility in terms of the traditional (bog-pod style) V-rest and the Mossback three-stick rest?

The sticks on the Mossback provide a snug cradle that allows you to balance the handgun practically hands-free in the cradle. Hope that helps.

Thanks! It does help since it does sound good. Have you tested the V-rest of the Bog Pod or similar sticks? I think the BogPod V-rest is moving sideways which could be good if you're following slow-moving game from the rest. But I take it the Mossberg sticks make it possible to move a little sideways as well?

The tripod will not move/sway. This is the most stable in the cradle sticks I have found.

Kingfisher,

sorry, I might have made myself a bit unclear. What I meant was if it is possible to follow game that moves say 10 yards in the cradle without having to move the sticks. I.e., if there is some flexibility in terms of aiming when having the gun on the sticks.
