I know this is a rifle question but a friend wants to know. What is the performance difference between the 444 and the 45/70 both in a 24 inch Encore.

I have both, a .444 Marlin in a Win 94 Bigbore, and a 45-70 in a Ruger No.1.

The 45-70 in a modern rifle (like the Encore) continues where the .444 Marlin stops, in that it can shoot a heavier bullet than the .444.

I would say it depends on the game hunted and the bullets used. For say Deer sized animals, there would be no difference, but if used on larger game such as elk, moose or bears, the 45-70 wins hands down.

The effective range due to trajectory is simular for both rounds.

I agree, the trajectories are similiar but the 45-70 wins hands down. I'm not sure what you can load the Encore to but I'm guessing it's the same as the Ruger #1 which is quite a bit more potent even than data for the Marlin 1895's as it's right on the heels of the 458 Win. I know handloading I can equal if not exceed the 450 Marlin in leverguns whereas the 444 is pretty much the same throughout from what I've seen and would only be a better choice if you were comparing it to a trapdoor or other weaker framed 45-70.

I'm a new member here, and this was the first thread I saw, that interested me. Since I have both calibers in Marlin levers.

Handloaded with hardcast WFN bullets, both should be about equal for stopping power on all Noth American game. Dead is dead as they say.
Its like comparing a 250gr 44 magnum handload, to a max hot 325gr 45 colt handload.
They both kill effectivly if used effectively.

If you are interested in maximum penetration in a given substance, then the 45-70 can definatley lob way heavier bullets.

Of course, once the point of complete penetration has been met with a solid, any further energy used, can be considered wasted
somewhere else behind the animal. I guess this is the "enough is enough" law.

A heavier bullet at modest velocity, can penetrate as far or further, than a lighter bullet at higher velocity.
This can often be accomplished with much less recoil and blast.

There is something to be said about "splat" energy as well.
Or energy that is dumped inside an animal, from a fast moving expanding bullet. This violence may drop an animal faster than just a large round hole through the organs.

Regardless of favorites, in my hands, 300gr 444s, and hot 405gr 45-70s have been indistinguishable in my hunting experience on deer, blackbear, hogs and elk.

Nine times out of ten, I will go with the larger diameter cartridge -- I personally choose the .45/70 over the .444.

I own Marlin 1895's in both 444 and 45/70, both with the 18.5 inch barrels. I feel they shoot about the same with expanding bullets on deer sized game. The advantage of the 45/70 comes through on larger, tougher game IMO. You can find solid loads up to 540grains in weight.

I've had both. In heavy-duty rifles, the 45-70 has more power in the top end loads. There are advantages to the 444 too. I always appreciated not having to buy a special bullet mould for mine. I shoot cast almost exclusively in the bigger bores & keep a lot of bullets on hand for the 44s.
