I can see from the hunting photos that you guys like taking boar.
Do you have a favorite gun/load combination you always use or do you use the gun on hand??
I`ve used guns in 357mag,41mag,44mag,45Colt,454,and 460S&W and found myself using my FA`s 454 with Winchester ammo loaded with a 260gr partition bullet. However, I`am starting to use a handload with a 300gr partition over H-110 in my 454.

James,
As I think we've discussed by e-mail some time ago, I've used a lot of revolvers and cartridges on hogs, mostly as an exercise in the fun of using what I own. Nothing is really any better than a .44 Mag., in my observation. Still, I've used the .41 Mag., .44 Mag., .45 Colt , .454, .475L, .50AE and .500WE. Maybe some others, if I think long enough.
In countries I've hunted where handguns were not permitted, I've used rifles in .308 Win., 7mm Rem. Mag., .338 Win. Mag. and .300 W'by. Mag.
There's STILL nothing better than the .44 (!)...just different.

I have taken over 15 wild boar, covering from the .41 Mag up to the .475 Linebaugh. In my opinion, the .44 mag is ideal. It has low recoil (compared to other rounds), and has many handload and factory load options. One of the most impressive results I obtained was with my iron sighted S&W 29 6.5 inch and the Winchester Partition Gold load. One shot at 45 yards on a 300 pound boar and he went no further than 10 feet.

I like the 44mag with the 300 XTP in the (Ruger Mag Length) The 240 will work but I like the 300 better on hogs.

In the 45 colt I use the 250 XTP almost all the time in the wheel gun.

In the 12" T/C I use the 300Gr Sierra JHC

May try the S&W 625 this year and I will use a 250 HC bullet in it.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

James, excellent topic.
I think the 260 Partition is about as good as it gets in a 454. In a 44 magnum I like the 310-grain Trueshot. Either on of these will bring some really big boys down if placed right. I also have the utmost confidence in the 165 Nosler BT in my 309 JDJ @ 2400 fps.

James, I have not yet had the chance to take many hogs, although they are high on my wish list. I have taken one pig ('bout 60lbs) while I was in Texas on an Axis hunt. I was hunting with my .308 Win Encore, using 125 NBT's. Its probably not the best combo for swine, but at 80 yards, he was DRT.

In .41 Mag you should load a 210gr.XTP on top of Alliant's max charge of #9. This probably seems mild compared to the various 454 loads out there, but it does the trick. I've killed 4 deer and about a dozen hogs with this load. At 25 yards it broke both shoulders and took out a fingers width of spine on a 250lb boar. I have never recovered a bullet. Ever. The XTP will exit on a shot that will stop a 150gr. Ballistic tip out of a 30-06 rifle. I thought it was a fluke the first 2 or 3 times I saw it, but now I just expect the .41 to exit. The .41 Remington Mag is in my experience the smallest handgun that will lay a pig, any pig, down with authority.

You know I have 2 opinions on this. The answers depend on the terrain, and style of hunting. But I think the partitions in any caliber would work nicely.

I think my 420 grain bullet at 1,350 fps from my .475 is near perfection. It is not angle-limited and will always exit......that said, I have taken a whole lot of wild hogs with a bunch of different calibers, and they have all worked, but some have worked better than others. While I think the .44 is more than adequate, I find it a bit underwhelming, particularly after using some of my bigger handguns. In .454, I have used 400 grain WFNs that worked REALLY well. I'm not an expanding bullet guy. I like uncompromised penetration above all, and with heavy hardcasts with a good nose profile, you don't have to drive 'em fast for complete pass-throughs. I simply want to know that if I have to take a Texas heart shot on a hog (or any animal), heading in the opposite direction, my bullet will reach the vitals -- and exit. But that's just me.

I use whatever I'm carrying, but if I had my druthers, I'd prefer my .45 Bisley loaded with 255gr hardcast "Keith"style swc's and 24grs W296.
