Fall turkey time!! I was hunting with this gun specifically for Sara...she loaded the ammo and wanted me to get a turkey with them.

I hunted Monday AM for a couple hours and only saw deer. So I hit it again this AM but went to my honeyhole and this time I saw a big fat nuttin!! Then I headed into the office for a couple hours, ran some errands and got home at 4:10PM. Grabbed my gear and headed back to the honeyhole...I just had a feeling and needed to get out there! I was still wearing my Wranglers and Columbia boots from work.

I got into the first field and was greeted by two does and a nice buck...no time for them so I busted into the field and kept on pace for the honeyhole. Ten minutes later I was there and settled in. Five minutes after that a group of hens walked over a small knoll and were headed for their roost. I ranged the lead bird at 181yds and scooted into the prone position. Just as she turned to walk into the woods I was presented with my favorite turkey shot...straight away. I centered the reticle between the wing butts, raised up about one MOA for the range and loosed the 50gr VM....END OF STORY!! This is actually the first blood on this gun. I LOVE fall turkey season!!

The details:

XP-100 chambered in .222 Remington Magnum Improved (45 degree shoulder and .248" neck)
HS Precision Silhouette stock
Burris 3-12x32, Burris rings and Weaver base
Harris Bipod
Herters brass, Fed 205, Varget, 50gr VM...loaded by my soon-to-be-six y.o. daughter (b-day in Nov 4)...she was thrilled that I got this bird with HER bullets!!
MV is 3100fps

I really do enjoy fall turkey. This was only the third day.....that's the only bummer...there is another week and a half to go!

I hunt it like deer season...same gear right down to the XP-100 and optics...only thing different is the cartridge.

It's not great....it's AWESOME! I do it a little different though. I have taken four handgun turkey in five years. The ranges were 229yds (.222 Rem XP), 100yds (.222 Rem XP), 396yds (7mm-270 WSM XP) and 181yds (.222RMI XP). The one year I did not get one I did not have much time to hunt and only got out maybe twice.

Some fall I'd like to be able to take a few fellas out handgunning for turkey. I can't guarantee anything other than fun and some LR shooting during midday time. Corn is the tough part...I have several good areas that are still covered in standing corn. They may let it stand until before deer season and that really limits the areas I have to hunt for birds.

Hunting turkey with anything less than a spear or sling-shot is not sporting! NICE bird!

You got it!! We were just talking about that last night. She's been off school with the flu and been wanting to load while I'm at work......not quite yet! Maybe we'll work on something tonight.
