I see the majority of red dot users here use conventional red dot scopes. Is there a distinct advantage over holographic styles on heavy recoil guns?

Jared in MT: Your question (and it is a good one) is directed re: recoil. Simple physics ie: Newton's Law of Inertia basically states an object in motion tends to stay in motion; and conversely an object at rest tends to stay at rest. That tells me that the lighter the red dot sight then the less it will be affected by recoil, all other strength factors (ie. of electronics, base, and design structure) being equivalent. Since a holographic sight is lighter than the tube style, in answer to your Q: The holographic style would be the better choice.

Freedom Arms offers a red dot holographic sight BASE for their revolvers and specifically mentions two brands; both holographic types. I have had no problems with my holographic red dot sight on my .44 magnum OR my FA 83 .500 Wyoming Express Model 83.

Yup, lighter is better. My Ultradot 30 weighs only 4-ounces -- don't know if it is heavier or lighter tha most holographic sights, but the weight definitely contributes to the longevity of the unit on a heavy recoiler.

Thanks. When money permits, I'll most likely go with the trijicon rmr/red dot or bushnell holosite. The trijicon is smaller, but the bushnell is cheaper.... until I have money in hand, I'll continue to ponder!

On edit: Just went to ultradots site and am intrigued my the L/T & Pan AV. Will throw them in the mix also.

i take it on and off so some of the clips are scattered in the pages.my buddy is in army and uses eotech, says they can take amazing abuse so i spent the bucks and am pleased

Before:

After:

The advantage is obvious, the only disadvantage is that you don't have the "tube" to align your eye. With just a little practice it comes up naturally.

Optima.

J-Point makes it now and the Burris FastFire is similar.
