Hello Just joined and have been searching all over for data for my encore pistol in 460 S&W. I am currently loading a 325 grain hard cast gas checked bullet over 41 grains of LIL gun powder. All the load data i can find is for an 8 in barrel. I am looking for any information on what kind of velocities i can expect from my 14 1/2 inch barrel. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have been told to expect about 50 feet per second gain per inch of barrel. How much does this hold true and also since i am not shooting a wheel gun do I gain much more because I am not losing pressure due to the barrel cylinder gap? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Forget that, generic old wives urban legend. The only way you will ever know for sure it to shoot it over a chrony, if you are stuffing your own you must have one, period. Best $90 you could invest.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I am using Lil Gun and 300 gr. XTPs Mags in mine. They are clocking over 2000 fps from a 15 inch barrel. IMO if the S&W will handle it the Encore will definately handle it. I also loaded some 250 gr. XTPs and H-110 but the bullets won't hold up to the velocity. You might try the 240 gr. XTP Mags. They should hold up better.

Use the 240 gr. XTP mags. They are made to handle the higher velocities.

Encore460,

I'll have some data for you, specific to my guns; however, it will give you an idea:

Horn SST, 200 gr. factory: 4"-1966 fps; 6"-2202 fps; 8"-2266 fps, Enc 12"-2617 fps

Try Swift A Frames or Northwest Custom Technologies also makes a cool bullet for the 460.

Hey all thank you for the information. I am casting the bullets my self and getting .75 inch groups at 50 and 1.5 to 2 inch groups at 100. I dont plan on changing the load or bullets as i think it is shooting pretty darn good. Want to invest in a chrony but as we all know the story home and bills come first toys second especially with being temporarily unemployed.

Hope to purchase an Encore .460 15" this coming spring and look forward to chatting with you in the future. Already own and love the S&W PC .460 but want to give another big dog a try. Just got back from Illinois where I ended the life of one 230 lb. 8-pt. whitetail @ 120 yds with "The Beast". Just a super handgun and caliber!

Hey Congrats on the deer waiting for monday for first day of deer here in PA. Was out for bear but didnt see any, first time i ever went here in pa so not sure if i was in a good spot or not. One suggestion about the 460 encore make sure you get some kind of muzzle brake on it. I am not one shy of recoil however i found that the muzzle brake alowed me to shoot more and more accurately. I also believe the encore is lighter than the smith.

I saw encore460's gun in action at the range and with the brake on it, it looked very controlable. he was on the bench next to me and the blast from the brake didnt affect me in anyway.

I also use Nosler Partitions in 260 gr. 45 gr. of H110. I get about 1900 fps. from my XVR 8 3/8 bl. It shoots 1 " groups at 50 yds.
