Just joined today. Been handgun hunting for a few years now. Eyesight getting bad and thinking of going to a scope. Never shot a handgun with a scope tho. So don't know which kind to go with. Red Dot or???? Currently shoot a Ruger Super Blackhawk with 7 and a half inch barrell. If i put a scope on it would also have to find a different holster for it as I also carry this as my concealed carry personel deffense. Any inputs would be greatly appreciated. And NO, I haven't had to shoot anyone YET. It seams when the big guns come out people listen????

Hi Carl. Welcome aboard. A red dot sight usually comes in 1x power or Tru Glow makes a 2x. I think it is 2.5 moa. dot. If you never shot with a scope the dot sight is nice because the eye relief is forgiving. If you want a scope, I would choose a Leupold 2x or a Burris 2x. The eye relief on the Burris is not as particular as the Leupold. One thing nice about the dot is you just put it on the deer and pull the trigger. It really stands out for hunting purposes.

If you wanna keep it small you might wanna go this direction: A scoped wheelgun can get a little bulky for PD.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I'm partial to red dot-type sights. They are super in low-light situations. My Ultradot 30 has been going strong for more than two years of serious abuse (and still has original battery in it).

Welcome to the forum!!
I like magnification... BUT, if you have been shooting with irons I would say go with a good red dot! You can use both eyes to acquire your target and get the advantage of only one focal plane for your eyes.

My 50ish eyes with their bifocals have really come to appreciate a red dot sight on my revolvers. Like Witworth I've come to love my 30mm UltraDot4. I've banged it around Alaska for over 6 yrs now with never a hicup. It will be moving from my mod 29 to my new SRH 480 as soon as it gets here!

We put an Ultradot 30 on my brother-in-law's .480 SRH last year and it works like a charm.....

Is that it in the above pic? TCMan is correct, that is my beloved five-shot custom .475 Linebaugh SRH.......

Thanks for the imput. I'll start researching red dot scopes and now what about Holsters for a scoped handgun. I have an Uncle mikes holster now and love the way it tucks under the left arm for drawing with the right hand. Thanks again.

I really like the 30mm Ultra Dot on my .41 Mag Redhawk. I use the Uncle Mikes Bandolier holster to carry it also. Good luck!

I've got an Uncle Mike's shoulder holster for my SRH with the red dot and I am happy with it. Cheap, not sexy, but functional.

Rod, too.

Here is my 460V with Aimpoint red dot. I love how fast you acquire your target with both eyes open. This is an Aimpoint CompML3 with a 2 moa dot. It shoots one hole at 25yards, and 2" groups at 100yards when I do my part and with my hand loads.

I'm surprised that one ring holds that thing on there.

Unfortunately there is only room for one ring on this sight. The ring on there is an aimpoint ring that already busted. I bought a Warne permanent ring and its holding much better so far.
I may end up putting this sight on the Encore .223 and get a scope or 9000 series aimpoint with 2x mag with 2 rings for the 460V.
