Would a 20" .45-70 Katahdin Pro-Hunter barrel be a good candidate to cut down to 12-15" length, recrown, have a throat and 6-screw base added? Other than the fluting, is there anything (rate of twist?) that would make this project a bad idea?

I don't see where there should be any problem. Twist rate has little to do with barrel length other than the velocity will drop a bit which may affect long bullets. With the big bores I have found velocity loss is not nearly as dramatic as with the bottlenecks, and short/fat bullets aren't as susceptible to de-stabilization. I say go for it.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I think that barrel is set up for a rifle forend so you might want to keep that in mind.

Did that to a 'new' .50 bp barrel. I think it shoots better and I know it carries better.

It's not the gun, but the man behind it.
