Okay, I know that our single shot brothers and sisters can make some extremely long shots with their handguns but I was wondering what the longest shot you have successfully (and ethically) made with your revolver chambered in a straightwalled pistol cartridge?

200 yards so far-Killed the paper the first time, but did some follow-up shots for good measure
To date around 75 yards on big game though.

It wasn't lasered with a rangefinder, but one time I managed to hit the ground at a little over 700 yds. But only 2 out of 3 times :-( Seriously we used to poke sitting rabbits out to 100yds or so pretty reguraly, & I'm sure some shots were a bit firther. I sure miss chasing jacks....

I'd say around 50 yards. That's about the farthest clear shot I have where I hunt.

Took this 3X2 buck at 108 yd, lasered after the shot using my 10" 357 Maxie & a 173 gr Keith cast slug, lots of damage to the lungs. He took 3-4 steps backwards & down. Whats left of the lungs using the 173 gr cast slug. Very nice color phase bear (6' 9") at about 88 yds I think, I was prone shooting up hill, Ruger 44 magnum, iron sights, 250 gr Keith slug, bear rolled 20 yds down the hill making some racket! Cow elk using my Ruger 45 & 260 gr Keith slugs, she was walking down a steep ridge towards us, my buddy was shooting her with the rangefinder. I had my walking stick angled into the snow & laying across my left thigh, my left hand was through the leather thong at the top of the stick, this is a very steady position for a sixgun. The shot was 168 yds, much too far under normal shooting circumstances with iron sights, because she was standing in 6"-8" of snow she stood out like a bus, she ran maybe 30 yds downhill & dropped on a forest service trail. Wyoming buck last year, gun was my Ruger 41 Bisley using 230 gr Keith slugs, distance was lasered after the shot, think it was about 90 yds from the sitting position. He was facing me, you can see the entry hole in the center chest, slug exited by the rear ham. He ran 35-40 yds with half his heart blown away. Pretty good bullet hole for a cast slug! Montana whitetail last year using my Ruger Bisley 41 magnum & the 230 gr Keith cast, she was running hard & I was very lucky, the distance, stepped off in the tall, wet grass was right at 100 steps offhand, perhaps a little more, hard to measure in tall grass, complete penetration & she dropped at the shot with an entry through the entestines & a exit through the left shoulder. I had to wade the Beaverhead river towing her to get to the truck, I didn't gut her until I reached the other side, that way she would float. Bull moose, 5 yrs ago, gun was my Ruger SRH 480 & a 375 gr softnose cast, shot was offhand, 45 yds downhill, took out both lungs & exited, bull moved about 15 yds & down. None of these was my longest shot with a sixgun, but I don't have a photo, it was in the late 70's & I was picking chokecherries, no camera. Dick

Ruger Super BH Hunter, .44 Magnum w/ 320gr cast and 2X Weaver. Shot was 65yds or so and taken offhand. That was my first revolver deer. I've taken more since but that is about the longest.

I'd say my furest wood be 'bout 50 yards (+)(-) a foot.

Thanks Guys,
Great shooting all. It's great to see that a good revolver, in the hands of experienced and practiced shooters, is capable of some pretty long shots.
Great pictures Sixshot. I am especially happy to see some of the animals were shot with the 41 Magnum as that is my new hunting handgun caliber.
The furthest I may get to shoot at a deer is around 60 yards limited by the area that I hunt (small area with lots of brush). I am hoping to get some practice at longer yardage this coming year while trying to thin the increasing hoards of woodchucks around this area

I've done a lot of shooting on steel plates to 200yds. This is simply to equip me for the possible "need" of a follow up shot at longer ranges. I'd never take a first shot on a deer at that range with a wheelgun...at least not in my hands.

127 yards, 41 mag with barnes 180 xpb. this is MAXo thisgun You might be able to stretch the 460, 500 or a 454 to the 150+ range. I never take a revolver to an area where i expect to shoot beyond 100 though. The energy and ability to penetrate with revolvers out at 150 and beyond really drops. To me the revolver is just like my bow......It is a closer range weapon. It is great sport to stalk to the 100 yard mark(or closer) to take game with a wheel gun. Besides, if you need to shoot further, grab a tc or an xp.....400+ is not that uncommon with the right long range set up/

A big four horn ram from 77 yards with my custom .44mag S&W 29-2. Standing position, gun slightly supported by a tree trunk. The 300gr XTP took out both lungs and exited, ram went about 50 yards and then down.

Great post Bo! I found it very interesting! 155 steps with open sights on a doe antelope. I figure it was about 130 to 135 yards.(I'm crippled up and can't take a full 3 ft step) I used my Ruger BH with a 250 gr FN Lee bullet. I killed another antelope doe at about the same distance (130 yards) with an open sighted Ruger SBH using a 44 cal 180 gr Serria bullet. Both these antelope were taken in the late 80s and early 90s before lazer range finders were common Longest shot with a scoped sixgun was a buck antelope at 145 yards (lazered) I was using a Ruger BH in 45 colt with a 280 gr WFN LBT bullet. I was using a 4X weaver scope Now days with my older eyes I like to shoot within 75 yards but I did take this doe antelope this year at 84 yards (lazered) Using my open sighted FA 454 using the 280 gr WFN LBT bullet. BTW I like all of 6 shots post because he's got some great pic's

My longest kill was with a Custom Ruger in 45 Colt. I kill a 100 pound pig at a lasered 218 yards with a 325 grain LFN at about 1350 FPS muzzle velocity..
I aso took a Carribou at an estimated 150 yards with the 45 colt and a 310 grain LFN at 1240 FPS muzzle velocity

We're on handgun hiatus here in Michigan right now as it is muzzleloader season. I just got in from hunting. Hand a little doe out in front of the box blind at around 15-20 yards. She fed out in front of me for an hour. Would have (should have?) been an easy handgun shot but wrong season. Besides, she was a suitcase doe (could have picked her up in one hand), might have gone 70 lbs if she was soaking wet and ate another 15 pounds of corn. Fun to watch though. My buddy, who owns the farm that I hunt (Thanks Mike), shot a nice doe. She went around 140lbs, nice and fat. I am looking forward to the anterless season coming up that will run from the end of muzzle loading to Jan 1st. We are going to take some time to hunt handgun only during this time. Should be great fun.
Lots of great posts here. Thanks for all of the input. Just a note: I think, from what I have seen and read here, that those making the long shots, whether with revolver or single shot pistol, have put in the time practicing longer shots and are therefore confident in their ability to not just connect, but to make a good shot that will put the target species down in minimum time. That take time and dedication to this great sport of handgun hunting.

92 yards doe Mule Deer with a Ruger 44 mag. with a 2.5 power scope. She went about 8 yards and I found a 1"x4" strip of hide in the sagebrush at the point of impact.
Don't confuse shooting with hunting. Shooting is a game, hunting is a sport.

76 yards last season with a redhawk and a nosler partition over a HEAVY load of H110.I am working hard to be able to go over the 100 mark.I did shoot a disc in Wyoming at 250yards,it rang out a few times but I wouldn't try to eat it,haha. PistolHNTR I disagree that a revolver doesn't have the ability to penetrate at 150 and beyond, after all Elmer shot his mulie at over 600 and the bullet didn't bounce off.I do agree that for most of us a revolver is a close in affair.

The farthest game was a whitetail doe at 115 yards with a 7.5" Freedom arms 454 set up with a 2x Leupold scope. Ditched the 2x after that hunt and set it up with a 4x which has now been replaced with the 2.5x8. The bullet entered the brisket on the left side and exited the rear of the opposite hindquarter. Full length penetration and her only movement was down. Load was a 300 grain slug at 1600 fps There was one doe at 90 yards with a 41 magnum. Slug entered just tight behind the right shoulder angling towards the offside shoulder. Bullet did not exit but the doe only made it about 4-5 yards. Offside shoulder was completely destroyed and I finally found the bullet. It was originally a 240 grain platinum tip and when found and cleaned, it weighed 238.7 grains and had expanded to .72". First deer with a handgun was this doe at 65 yards with the 454. The elk that was a subject of debate here recently was shot at 90 yards with an open sighted 44 magnum using 250 grain Keith softnosed cast bullets from sixshot. The two exits you see in the picture were 1.4 and 1.5". You can also see the entry of two other shots in the bottom of the picture. This elk was tough, that's all I can tell you. Barbados Ram 55 yards with a FA 44 magnum with 4x Leupold shooting a 313 grain RCBS SWC bullet. Ram ran about 20 steps and fell over. Here is the entry, Shot was a high lung hit exiting low on the other side due to the angle and the animals horns in the way at the shot. Merino Ram at 90 lasered yards with a 7.5" FA 454 with 4x Leupold. The load used was a modest 950 fps load using the 270 SAA bullet in 45 colt brass. The ram was looking at me at the shot. I placed the bullet in the crease of his neck on his left side and the only movement was down. Black Hawaiian ram. 50 yards with the TLA 44 magnum shooting 250 grain Keith bullets at 1025. This was a tough ram. I placed two through the shoulder and one raking shot that entered just in front of the right hindquarter and exited the left side of the brisket. The area was very thick and they don't bleed well due to all the hair so I figured I better put him down quickly. All three shots were fired in about 6-8 seconds.
