Im thinking of scoping my new SRH .44. Dont have alot of green to spend right now and found some really inexspensive scopes online. Im looking at a Simmons Prohunter 4x32mm, Konus 2x28mm and a 2x Ncstar all 3 scopes sell for under $100.00. Im somewhat familiar with Simmons but never heard of Konus or Ncstar. I would really prefer a 2x for a revolver. Any comments or experience with these?

I understand exactly your situation. You could always scour Ebay, Gunbroker, etc., and look for a good deal on a better quality scope, for a few bucks more. I'd rather spend a bit more now, instead of having to buy a $80 scope, then another $100 scope when that one broke. Even though SRH's don't kick as hard as lighter .44's, they still kick. Many of the cheaper scopes would probably last a lifetime on a .22, but come to pieces on a 44.

Take a gander at the Weaver 2X or 4X. I have both...I bought one new, it was around $130. Also snagged a used one for $110. Both are mounted on Super BH Hunters, a .44 Mag and a .45LC. Both are shooter 320+ grain bullets at over 1300fps. The Weaver scopes are holding up great after several hundred rounds.
And I agree 100% with 480man....cheap scopes are just that, cheap scopes. Skip a few Starbucks or packs of smokes (whatever your vice may be) and put those $$'s toward better optics. You'll be much happier in the end.

Weaver 2x here, I took someone's advice and went with the Weaver. I guy said he had one on a 500 SW and had no problems.

I have a Simmons 4x on my Bisley Hunter in .41 mag and it is holding strong. I bought a Burris 4x for my SRH .480 for $105 slightly used. I don't have any Weaver fixed power scopes but do have their variables and they are great so I expect the same from their fixed models. Don't think that you have to buy new to get quality. NC Star are a crapshoot, some get lucky and some not so much.
Rod, too.

I've got a Simmons 4X on my .45-70 Contender that's holding up and a BSA 2X on a .45Colt Contender that's also doing well. In this day and age, I find that most scopes will hold (you will always find a lemon or two)the difference is in clarity and the higher priced scopes are clearer. Just my .02 worth.

I'll have to say look for a used scope right here & other places on line. I've used Leupold, Nikon, Burris (all in 2X) & a T/C 2.5X. All were good & I still have the Leupold as a back up. I regretted giving up the Nikon. I tried a 4X Leupold once & flat out hated it. Too much in some cases. The cheaps will cost you in the long run. Stick w/open sights until you get what you want. You'll get more bang for your buck. I currently use a Bushnell 3200 2-6X. I think the Bushnells are pretty good. JD Jones of SSK used to recomend them. I should add that the Leupold went from my 44 using 300's to my FA 454. It's been 16 good years w/that scope. Narry a problem.

I looked thru a couple at a pawn shop, a Simmons 2x and a leupold 4x. I didnt like the leupold at all, the Simmons was pretty good. I think Ill wait till summer and get better glass, sounds lke the weaver line is worhty of checking out. There is some good deals on Burris also. Thanks for the advice!

Interesting, I pretty much only scope my guns with Leupold. The 4x being my favorite. If you don't mind me asking, what did you not like about the leupold? Regardless of what you buy, remember that only a rich man can afford to buy a cheap scope

The leupold was a 4x and comaring it to the simmons 2x, it wasnt as clear and was harder to find the eye relief. Im not in any way knocking leupold, but I dont think they are any better than the other brands. IMO they are terrribly overpriced! I havent owned 1 in a pistol scope, but I can tell you the only riflescopes I have had fail were 2 leupolds,a broken crosshair and not enough adjustment in the other. Ive never had any trouble with any of the "cheap" rifle scopes even on the big kickers. Maybe handgun scopes are differnt. Im gonna check them all out before I buy. Really leaning towards the Simmons or Weaver line right now. I think that Weaver is now actually owned by Meade and Simmons. I like the rich man quote. I will pass that one on to my wife! LOL

A Weaver scope for your 44 would be a good choice.

I will probably go Weaver or Burris. Should I go 2x or 4x? Will the 28mm objective bell clear the barrel with the stock SRH rings?

I will probably go Weaver or Burris. Should I go 2x or 4x? Will the 28mm objective bell clear the barrel with the stock SRH rings? Yes. The largest objective lens on any handgun scope (that I know of) are 32mm and they will fit with no problem. As far as 2x or 4x, that's a personal preference. If you're new to using a hangun handgun scope, I would suggest starting with a 2x. With a 2x, you'll have a wider FOV and easier target acquisition. If you can, look through both before purchasing.

Maybe I can do something after new year. Not having a scope this year is killing me! Ive had 3 chances at a big 8 pt this year just out of my comfort range. Im hoping with a scope I will be able to shoot to at least 80-100 yds.

As Kral said, 2x or 4x is a matter of personal preference. My preference on revolvers is toward the 2x end. Litte bigger field of view (generaly), & quicker on target. Even my fovorite long gun, my Marlin Guide Gun only wears a 2.75x scope (scout position) for that reason. I want it to be fast & clear on target from 0-200 yds. I generally just don't need the added magnification at revolver or Guide Gun ranges. There will be exceptions, but I think on balance the lower power is the way to go. Again, personal preferance. On a side note I had a Weaver variable on one of my Encore barrels & it was a great scope, so I would consider them a top runner for fixed power as well. Kral's would probably be a great choice when you can make it happen.

Don't skimp on scope quality. I have a Leupold 2x on a Thompson Center Encore pistol in .450 Marlin. 200 rds and still going strong. Also remember that scope mounts are just as important. SSK Industries TSOB mounts are pricey but are unbreakable. Good luck.

SSK Industries TSOB mounts are pricey but are unbreakable. Good luck. Agreed...but I have had just as much luck with a Weaver base and three Leupold Rifleman rings. I lap the rings to make sure things are aligned exactly.

I've been very pleased with the range and field performance of the Leupold 2X EER on my M45 Dan Wesson. Cheap scopes are no bargain, take it from me....and a few hundred other 'suckers'.
Based on total trigger pull weight, my trigger finger has lifted well over 200 tons....

Ive come to realize this. I have gotten by with cheap riflescopes my entire life, but the big bore handguns are going to require the good stuff. Nice Dan Wesson by the way!

Don't forget Weigand rings & bases. I've used Weaver & SSK too. Weavers are very strong for less $$$. Just not pretty. Then again you don't either w/a SRH. Lapping the rings can help or use scope tape. Muddydog are you hunting from a stand or afoot? The 4X can help w/long shots. Especially from a stand. You Texas boys seem to like those tree houses.

Im using a popup ground blind for the first time this season. It is great! My area has alot of hunting pressure from the neighbors so the deer are very skittish! I havent been seen or smelled all season! I use some homemade shooting sticks and a comfortable chair and have a rock solid rest. Deer dont pay it any mind, got deer 20yds nearly every hunt. But still need to be able to shoot to 100yds,not having a scope cost me a shot at a real bruiser! Probably going with a Burris or Weaver 4x. On occasion I will leave the blind and just sit on the ground against a tree, its my favorite way to hunt, but that chair and the blind sure is comfy!
