Hello fellow handgun hunters. I am new to these forums and am looking for some advice. I currently have a Ruger GP100 (357) with the 6 inch barrel. Shoots ok carries easy and has one doe under it. Guy I work with wants to trade a Ruger Super Blackhawk for it. I've always wanted one and don't have the money to buy one outright. Where is the better deal? Specifically in regard to hunting with either?

I dont know the dollar value, but I would defiantely trade for the .44 assuming it is in good condition. Its hard to beat the SBH for a hunting sidearm! Ive used one for years.

Don't make the deal 'til you shoot it. The GP grip is nothin' like the cowboy grip and V-V. If you like the GP grip angle look into a Bisley model, they are quite similar. I could never get used to the plowhandle, love the Bisley and SRH/GP.

Rod, too.

I would prefer the SBH, but that's just me.

X3 and might as well buy him breakfast one morning also.

Dollar wise, around here the GP100 is worth a bit more the the Blackhawk, assuming they're both either blued or stainless. Clean GPs run about $375- $400, and Blackhawks are about $50.00 less. It was suggested earlier that you shoot the SBH before considering a trade, and that's really good advice. I personally don't like the way single-actions twist in my hand under recoil, and have sold all mine off, replacing them with Redhawks & Super Redhawks.

If you do trade, make him buy you lunch, and a box of ammo.

thanks for all the great advice. just to answer some of the "what if's" that came up. Both guns were stainless the GP a 2002 model and the SBH an 2006. Both in good shape. He wanted the GP for home and I the SBH for hunting. I made the trade and am happy. I think I came out a box of ammo ahead in the deal. I did shoot it and it may take some getting used to, but how will I know if I never try! Thanks again!

I would trade if the SBH is a 44- I have two - 7 1/2 and a 4 5/8 you can load them down to practice and load some pretty heavy stuff for hunting. I don't feel the need to be anywhere close to maximum loads to be effective whitetail loadsin my 44's compare to what I can load up formy .357's.-

I too prefer the feel of most of the DA guns to the SA guns, but it's strictly personal preference. Try it if you can.

It is harder to carry the Blackhawk as a carry gun. If that is your primary use of the GP you may end up getting another carry gun (I like that idea!!)when you trade for the Blackhawk. But for hunting the Blackhawk is a winner!
