My 15" 45/410 barrel came in yesterday. I will be using it mostly as the 410 barrel but have seen some guys on other sites getting good accuracy out of them using 45 cal bullets out of 410 brass hulls and out of fire-formed 9.3x something brass (either 74 or 82)
and ideas or info would be great

The only thing I had ever heard was expanding the end of a .444 Marlin case to hold a .45 cal bullet and fireforming that to push out the case walls. Some (not sure how many) Contender 45LC/.410 barrels would accept this round...it was called the .450 Mongo or something close to that.

BTW....I tried it in my Super 16 .45LC/.410 barrel and it would not work.

If you have the vent rib and not the normal open sights you will not get the best accuracy to start off with.

Using anything but the 45 case would leave a lot of room between the powder and bullet and you will not get uniformed ignition of the powder and could cause a pressure spike. You would need some wadding to keep the powder in the right place and they can cause issues of there own. The volume of the case would make it real easy to double or triple charge the case and make your barrel go boom in your face.

I would and do stick with 45 colt loads but I seat them out as far as I can and still get a good grip on the bullet..

Some of the reasons for the poor shooting 45 colt is that the bullet has such jump to the rifling and then the amount of the rifling isn't enough to put a good spin on the bullet then you have the sight issue to deal with.

A lot has been written about your 45 barrel. The 9.3 x whatever, 444 marlin, and 303 British will all work. I use 444 marlin brass for shotshells and they work great. The 450 mongo mentioned above uses the 444 marlin brass and works well in older vintage barrels I have read. As long as I stick with jacketed bullets though (which I hate because wheel weights are FREE) I get decent accuracy from both of my 45/410 barrels. Weatherby cartridges and the Rem ultramags have lots of freeboard (not to the extent of the 45/410 barrel though) so it is not the end of the world to have a bullet jump, even if we know it is not the best way to do things. I know a lot of folks wind up going to the longer case just to burn some more powder and I really don't recommend that. If you still are having trouble after some load development I would try the 9.3 or 303 British cases. The 444 marlin has a smaller rim and may cause extraction problems if you try to use up come of that extra case capacity.

Here is another referance to the use of 9.3 X 74R brass. The poster has done a fair amount of work with it. Take it for what it's worth. Just a guy experimenting in the unknown. Please use reason and be safe.

9.3 X 74R brass in a 410 barrel

I installed my 10" 45/410 barrel on my Encore this afternoon while I had the frame out. I pulled out some 444 brass and some 303 brass for comparison based on this thread.
The 444 brass chambered just fine (I didn't expand it, so perhaps it won't fit after it's expanded to 45cal with a bullet seated) but...the rim of the 303 brass was too thick to close the action all the way.
I have R-P, WW, Super Speed and PMC headstamps, and none of them fit.
I know that everybodys barrel dimensions and frame gaps are a little different, but just an FYI for those interested in this. I would have to thin the rims of the 303 brass for this to work for me.

Here's a question I'll add to this thread: Since I have an Encore 45/410 barrel, can I shoot 454 Casull through it? Can anyone think of any inherent weaknesses in the combination barrel that the factory 454 barrels wouldn't have? There's no practical reason for doing so, other than that I'm curious about what the recoil/muzzle flip would be like in the Encore with the short tube.

the chamber is to sloppy for the pressures of the 454. You may not blow the barrel apart but you will loose your cases very quickly due to splits and head seperation..
