I had the same situation happen with an Encore SS frame. It developed tiny "pits" on the side of the frame seemingly overnite. It is the only frame that I own that I had specially engraved. It also had an SSK trigger job.

I called my contact at T/C and he said to send it in, they might be able to repair it. So I did and when they sent it back it came with a note that said: "We were unable to repair the rust due to the engraving, but we did replace the worn parts in the trigger."

I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the frame is a casting; does that make it porous or more prone to pitting?

I had the whole gun Frame and Barrell get a light brown looking cast to my SS Pro Hunter last deer season. It was a damp, and rainy, season. It had rusted, so I took some steel wool and oil and gave it a good scrubbing. I think that the bead blasted SS rusts more easily.

I once was involved in the manufacturing of motorcycle carburators made from cast aluminum. At least once that I remember, we had problems with the aluminum carb bodies developing rusty spots. The problem stemmed to a vendor tumbling the castings in media that had also been used for ferrous parts. Ferrous residue imbedded itself in the aluminum and later rusted. Perhaps some SS frames have been introduced to tumbling or blasting media that had been previously been used on regular steel parts...

Same thing can happen when polishing SS with steel wool. Best to ues a scotch brite pad or stainless steel steel wool.

ss can rust depending on the grade of it. try using a birchwood casey cloth that you use to clean the end of the cylinder on a revolver. i don't think it will put a shine on it but try it on a less noticeable spot first.
