I touched on this in a few other threads. At 50 yards w/a 4 5/8" Black Hawk (3 screw) I get 10+" groups or worse w/250+ weight bullets. Somone else stated the slower twist of Rugers & I've read it other places too. Anyone else run into this? If so what did you do? Bullet recomendations, loads, etc. Montana has 220 WFPGC I think could work. I haven't messed w/it in years & now Bisley Bud got me thinking again. Shame to leave it in the cabinet. Lastly, steel grip frames. Worth the expense? This one is factory original w/out the safety upgrade even.

I know we're in the HHM forum, and there's alot 'o fellas that shoot long range around here - god love 'em (you too Tigg). Never-the-less, as a long time .44 revolver hunter myself I'm still of a mind that 50 yards is a 'fer piece for 4 5/8" open sighted .41 caliber 3 screw! That being said, I can tell you that I would not be satisfied hunting with a revolver that only gave forth 10" within what I felt to be my comfort range (about 60 yards with an open sighted .44 that I can shoot well). I myself get groupings of about the size of a grapefruit at 60 yards, off-hand, consistantly, with my 6 1/2" Blackhawk .44 Magnum with 270 gr. Speer GD soft points.(I don't bother to actually "measure" the group - Thats pretty darn good enough shootin for any off-hand big bore whose recoil could be classified as "stout") That's "comfort" enough for me to hunt the big whitetails that I so passionately persue. But, again - thats out of a 6 1/2" .44 Magnum. I should think I would like a better grouping than 10" from a revolver that I was going to hunt with.
As far as changing the grip on that 3 screw - I'm not sure what your motivation to do so is, so I'll leave that with a question; why are you considering it?

Well no I'm not satisfied. I've had several handguns that would print amazing groups. This 1 won't yet. Thats why I'm looking for solutuions. I just don't like aluminum on my guns. Plus a little more heft can't hurt either. Thats what I was getting at w/the grip frame.
I've considered an action job w/reaming the forcing cone & even reaming the chambers.

Bingo I have a NM RBH bisley in 41 mag 7.5" that I will be testing some MBW 240gr WFN and 255gr LFN bullets w/H110 this week end weather permitting. I will let you know what happens.

My 41 Redhawk shot abysmally with 265 gr LFNs. I recut the forcing cone to cure the factory butcher job, which looked like it was done with a rat-tail file, did the trigger, and all for nothing. I fact, that gun HATED cast bullets entirely. By accident one day I found a load it liked XMP5744 with Hornady 210 gr XTPs. The maximum load listed by Accurate Arms. I finally sold the gun in a fit of pique. Anyway, I later learned that the early Ruger 41s wouldn't tolerate bullet weights of over 240 grains well. This little tidbit came from John Taffin, back on the old "Sixgunner" site. It certainly matched up well with my results.

That seems to be what I keep comming up with. I'll wait & see what Dasbear's results are. I'm leaning toward those Montana 220's I think you suggested on the other thread. Shame you got rid of it. 41 Redhawks are hard to come by. We all have some we're sorry we got rid of!

After reading your post, I took my .41Redhawk to the range. I had four different bullets loaded and I wanted to check the accuracy.
I had two different 275 gr bullets, one gas checked cast and one jacketed. Both shot to the same point of impact at 50 meters with a 2 inch group. The 265 gas checked LBT went four inches low with a group at 2.5 inches. The last bullet,a 300 grain jacketed, was four inches high and a 2.5 inch group. I have a red dot on this gun and I know I could have done better with a scope. All of these loads were using a hefty load of H110 worked up just for this gun. They are cranking.

Thats what has gotten me puzzled. Some people have no issue w/the heavy's & others have somthing akin to my problem. I'll have to brake it out again & get to work. It was years ago I shot those groups w/others shooting as well for a "proof read". All done from a bench on a warm day. 25 & 50 yards w/open sites. The holes at 50 were elongated indicating a tumble. It's been shelved since. So many projects. Who's bullets were you using? Maybe I need to get out the Ransom. LOL

No good news here I shot 4 different loads at 30 yds and my best group was 3.5" worst was 6" with 240-255GC from MBW and I know there is at least 1-2 off center throats now I also tried a 220 JHP and 240 JHP factory loads that weren't to my standards either. ??????????

I've read that article. It's just one more way to confound me. Proof will be on the paper I guess. I even sent Ruger an e-mail. So much for the "we'll return your e-mail w/in 3 business days."

Thinking about the erradict performance of the Ruger pistols I think something else is going on besides the rate of twist. If the twist was to slow in these revolvers they wouldn't stabalize the 300gr bullet that I use. An often overlooked accuracy problem is the barrel crown. I did have my Rehawk recrowned. That, I think is why it shoots so good. Recrowning is cheap and easy and the first thing I do when having accuracy problems. Just a thought.

True. I had a SBH that was average & after a Predator job at Mag-Na-Port it became very accurate. But it was never all that bad to begin with. Gotta start somwhere I guess. Thanks boys.
