I have hunted in Texas for over twenty years, and have never found anything that you could not hunt there with a handgun.

You can use any LEGAL centerfire cartridge. Legal means no fully automatic weapons, no silencers, or anything else the Federal Government says is illegal.

3 for YES YOU CAN! The rule book is very clear and favorable for handgun hunters! I can say that the last 2 Game Wardens I rode with were very interested in my handgun interest as well.

I have been told that you cannot use a handgun on PUBLIC lands, only shotgun or ML?

Got any info there?

Here is a quote from Texas Hunting and fishing regs. It came from the FAQ's on public land hunting.

Q5: I used to be able to hunt with a rifle in a Public Hunting Area, but this year it's all archery hunting. Why?
A5: As development increases, hunting with firearms has to be controlled for the safety of the people living around the hunting areas. Decisions regarding means are driven by resource considerations and safety.

If you would go to the tool bar above, to the "links tab" and scroll down to "Texas Parks and Wildlife" you can get all the info you need. Go to pg. 56 in the regulations summary and all the legal and illegal methods of hunting are there.

Tinkerer, the public hunting lands in Texas all have their own specific rules. Some allow only archers, some allow all firearms, and some have different restrictions. You need to read the specific restrictions for the location you wish to hunt.

Public Hunting land is screwy because the Corps/Biologists help write the rules for each little property. Or that is what at least use to happen... You best bet, CALL A GAME WARDEN!! Get it straight from the horses mouth!
