This question is in a hunting situation do you prefer light for caliber/midsize for caliber/heavy for caliber projectiles, and why?

Heavy lead for the revolvers... I've only taken bow range shots on medium size game.

It depends.
Big bore and flat nose.....then I like the bullets heavy.
Medium bore and pointed....medium weight for caliber.

Heavy for caliber all the time. I loike a bullet/load combaination that will reach the vitals from any and every angle presented and I like two holes always. But that's just me......

I second what Whitworth says w/the proviso that I'm primarily a single action revolver fan.

I try to match velocity with expatiation rate. EG, if you put a 162 SPBT in a 7mm TCU shortgun, you are going to shoot a nice little hole threw game. (If you call Hornady they are going to suggest shooting a 120gr bullet for hunting deer sized game.)
HOWEVER, I am all for shooting heavier bullets, particularly in straight walls! Just make sure for for bottle necks, shooting rifle bullets, that you match velocity with the designed expatiation` rate of the bullet.

I like heavy bullets but always go with what shoot best in a given firearm. Experiment and find out what your guns like. I am a firm believer that bullet placement is far more important than the bullet (using common sense). With that said the bullet needs to be constructed well enough to handle what you are using it for.

As in the case of blackpowder hunting, hunting big game with a revolver means that you can't necessarily rely on velocity to provide the energy needed to send a bullet from one end of your bruiser to the other.(I'm with Whit on the "two hole" result)So, making up for a lack of velocity with plenty of lead weight is elementary. In the case of my high power rifle (.308 Winchester) I prefer a weight of the 150 grain flavor, though many eastern deer and bear hunters prefer the 180 weights. Both are quite adequate given the comparatively higher velocities of typical high power rifles. So, as Dan points out - it depends. I like heavy for caliber for lower velocity guns, medium for caliber for high velocity guns.

Quote: "Depends."
When I was hunting coyotes for the pelts in the late 80's and early 90's for the money, I had a bullet/load that worked great for my 22-250 rifle as well as one for my .223 Contender Pistol: the "magic coyote load" that went in with a .224 hole and blew up inside with no exit (in a perfect situation.) Less sewing and bigger check from the fur buyer.
For antelope and deer in a pistol (Encore or Contender) I like a "medium weight" premium bullet; for elk I want a heavy premium bullet for caliber. In revolvers, pretty much the same, however my 2 revolver elk were 260 gr. in .454 although for my next revolver elk I want to try a 440 gr. in my .500 WE.

I usually use the middle weights.
It's not the gun, but the man behind it.
