OK, all of the offhand comments (pun intended) are interesting. Now, for you offhand shooting hunters, what sort of sights do you have on your revolver or single shot?

I really want to be able to be proficient with an open-sighted handgun, whether it be a notch rear or a ghost ring rear. That means plenty of practice, but, especially in the South, a lot of deer one sees are running because of hunting pressure from dogs or from walking up on them. Using a scope is not conducive in that scenario.

When I began to think about handgun hunting, it was because of my own experience that the shots presented to me were all < 100 yds, and mostly less than 30 yds. Sounds like perfect open sight hunting to me, though I would consider a JPoint type as well.

I have had my best luck with a V-notch rear sight (express style) and a rounded blade front sight that was colored near the tip. However, most of my experience has been shooting jack rabbits and other smaller animals are distances from 50 to 100 yds. The country around here is rather open & the close situations that you experience are seldom encountered here.

The best "open sight" set-up that I ever used was on a friends Ruger blackhawk in 30 carbine. The front sight had been made from a quarter and the upper part was painted red. The rear was a V notch with a white line. It was easy to hit a jack rabbit at 100 yds with that revolver.

For open sights I prefer a fiber front with a square notch rear but I also prefer a low power scope setting for running shots. I find it too hard to line up the sights while tracking on a running deer. I also only shoot at something running in a limited set of circumstances.

For 2 years I have been using halo-type red dot sights with a four minute dot on two different revolvers; it works great for off hand: just put the dot on target and squeeze the trigger.

I think this might suit my aging eyes (47 in April) though I am near-sighted. The JPoint seems to have a good reputation, even on the considerable recoil guns, is that a fair assessment?

I will say that the green fiber optic sight on the front paired with a notch rear is what came on my Encore Pro Hunter 209x50 and I found this combination easy to use and quick to point. When just starting out with it and developing a load, i could keep 3 shots within 3" at 50 yds. That combo shows promise in my mind.

I agree with that too, though "running" is also a relative term. If you happen to be in the right place at the right time, "running" ends up more like "loping along" and doesn't present a horrible shot opportunity. In these cases, I can certainly see the desire for a revolver for a quick second shot if necessary. I'm sorta leaning toward a .454 Casull revolver from a US manufacturer.

On a revolver I like an express style bead with a V-notch rear. If I'm using a scope I keep it set on low power not over 4x.

Right now I hunt exclusively with irons with my revolvers. I feel confident with about 40 or 50 yds in. 50 would be a long shot to me. So I practice constantly off hand, the situation presents itself alot while I'm hunting and shooting supported is not an option at times. I now have fiber optic fronts on my guns,it has helped me a lot hunting especially in the late evenings. I sorta bowhunt with my guns, I love that ambush style of hunting and gettin close. Now before I buy guns that I will hunt with I make sure they can accommadate these fiber optic fronts for hunting.Ruger has a good line of these and Magnum Research too that change out easy on all SRH's SBHH's and BFR's.

I really like the ORH peep and fiber front.

It's not a precision setup, but is quick to acquire and really shows up in low light as well as sun.

I sure like the way that looks. How accurate are you with that ORH. That looks like it would be perfect for the way hunt.

Yes; I have the J-Point on my Freedom Arms .500 WE and also on a Ruger SBH .44 mag with no problems so far.

I have trouble with the colored front sights, they blurr for me. I like the patridge style front sights with a square rear notch.

I do have a Ruger Redhawk with the brass bead front and the V notch rear but have not tried it yet.

It works for me, not the most precise point of aim but it is consistant from shot to shot.

I like S@W target sights. Also the factory sights on my x frame with a high viz front and adjustable rear have worked fantastic.

I like a "fine" fiber optic front bead with a square rear notch. I have a Marbles dovetail fiber front mounted to a shorty ramp on my SBH I like the best. I have a high viz on a MK II that I like but the bead is a little to big in my opinion. I have a high viz spark on a 10" vent rib Contender barrel that is also a nice setup. I am going to stick a set of Williams Firesights on my SRH as soon as I can find them in stock somewhere and I have shot them on a GP100 and was very impressed.

I like the fiber optic types as well. Haven't found one high enough for mine though.

What are you using for a mount on that blackhawk with the j-point? Would the front sights block your field of veiw?

I bought a base that was designed for the SBH that takes the place of the rear sight. It was made and sold by J-Point but I believe they are not offered any more. I removed the front sight on that revolver.

However, I have the same J-Point Red Dot Sight on my Freedom Arms Model 83 with the front sight intact and it does not interfere with the red dot at all, the red dot "sits" above it.

They have one here for "double action" ruger revolvers, but I think the SA's have the same basic rear sight as the DA's:

I used a Weigand for mine, which works fine but I would prefer it to be a bit lower. I didn't know there was a SBH base at the time.

s4s4u has the right answer, the Ghost sight with fiber optic front (use competition model front) are the best..I have them on all of my Glocks and use them on Rugers also..easy to pick up centers automatically and seem very accurate...try em you will like em....ElDee

Where did you find that ghost ring for a Glock? I have an M&P, which has a dovetailed rear sight, so it should be easy to find for the M&P I'd guess.
