Is there any real world practical reason to get a Matchdot instead of the Ultradot 30? I keep thinking it would be nice to have that 2 MOA dot sometimes, but then I think that's a damn small dot.
I'm going to put one or the other on my 6.5" 44 and practice until I can make those 100 yard shots. I've never done handgun hunting before, but I want to

For me personally, there isn't. For hunting applications, you can't go wrong with the 30. I have been using one on my .475 Linebaugh for about three years now and it has worked like a charm and withstood a tremendous beating. Oh, and I am still using the original battery! The smaller dot adjustment is nice for target work, but if your primary use will be hunting, I would stick to the lighter, cheaper Ultradot 30. JMHO.

The only drawback of the MatchDot is the length of the turret, which won't fit between some ring spacing on some guns, namely Rugers. The 2 MOA dot would be nice sometimes, as would the 8, but I have 4 or 5 min dots and they work fine for most hunting.

check out the new Bushnell Zoom Dot. You can adjust the dot size from 1 MOA to I think 6 MOA.

My obsession with Ultradots stems from the fact that they can withstand an aweful lot of brutality without breakage. I have literally subjected mine to thousands of full-tilt .475 Linebaugh loads (the one load I use -- 420 grain bullet at 1,350 fps) and it works like a charm. Plus, it has twice fallen out of tree stands and again, kept on ticking. Add to that the lifetime warranty and the fact that an Ultradot 30 will set you cak $150.00 shipped, and they just cannot be beat. There are nicer red dots out there, but they cost a hell-of-a-lot more and won't necessarily withstand a lot of recoil and other abuses. Just my 2 cents..........

No, Bushnell is solidly out - Ultradot of some kind for sure.

Whitworth, or anyone who has used this alot, would the Ultradot 4
give me much extra, it appears the 4 moa dot is small enough for groups (with the right paper target) & large enough for hunting, am I wrong? Also, For targets I know a 2 min would be better, but I fell that if I use a white bull large enough for a thin white ring around the dot, it should be precise for a revolver like a SRH. Is this right? That's not a put down of the revolver, I just don't demand a sub half inch group like I would with my Match AR or M700 308.

I use & like the Ultradot 4.
MOST of the time mine stays on the 4moa setting while hunting, but in thick areas where I know a shot could come quick & close I may change it to 8. I have on occassion even set it on 12 or 16 when approaching my black bear bait station & I have reason to believe a brown bear may be around. At that point range is short (under 25 yds) & if I have to kill a brownie in self defence (can't hunt them (brownies) over bait & in my area only a few tags are drawn for anway.) it's going to be close & fast so I want a BIG dot.
My Ultradot has spent almost 7yrs on handguns here in Alaska & has never given even a hicup. Most was with 44 mag loads, 320gr & 1340ish fps, then a bit on my 450 Marlin Guide Gun, & now on my SRH 480.

I have found that I am really at no disadvantage with the 4 MOA dot in all of the ways I use it. Sure it would be nice to have a smaller dot for shooting groups, but I only punch paper to practice for hunting, and I don't feel it really is a hindrance. I have shot under an inch at 50 yards off of bags with my .475 SRH, and it is clearly capable of more (I evidently am not!). My point being that it is still possible to shoot precisely even with a 4 MOA dot. I also really like the 30 because it only weighs 4-oz.

Vaance & Whitworth, both of those make sense.

OK, this thread convinces me to get the Matchdot then. The extra money isn't really a big deal to me, but it looks like I may want the extra versatility sometimes. Thanks.

I use the black-on-orange "shoot and see" round targets for dots and fiber optics. They come in 3", 4", 5", 8" and 12" so you can find a size that will just "halo" your dot at nearly any range or dot size. It looks like an eclipse when your dot is centered just so. Really helps with groups.
