I have some discontinued ammo from Winchester in 454, it is the 300gr Jacketed Flat Point. I found the gun I just built really likes this stuff so I want to try and duplicate the load. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I've done a little looking around and the only two 300 gr. bullets that aren't hollow points are Sierra and Speer. I have some of both. The Sierra people told me on their bullet not to push it past 1650 though. The Speers are jacketed not the plated Gold Dots. If you want to try the Speers just let me know and they are yours. I would imagine it would be something like a healthy dose of the 296 powder or they would say it's a special blend.

That load was supposed to duplicate Freedom Arms' 300 grain load and the bullets were the same. That is actually a really good load and I am sorry that Wincheste no longer produces it. I ill do some digging and see what I can find out about that particular load.

It's unfortunate that they stopped producing them. I always got great accuracy from them and my .454 SRH.

It would make sense if it were the FA bullets because they don't look like the normal speer or sierra stuff, the shoulder where the bullet starts to taper is sharper and the amount of exposed lead is greater than on most bullets.

I still need to play with the xtps some more but on my initial outing with my first hand loads I was getting about 2" @ 25yds but when I switched to the factory winchester, I shot a one hole group. I bought the ammo before I even had a 454 because it was on clearance 50% off so I got it for 20.00 a box. I bought 4 boxes but now I wish I had bought the other 4 that were left. I still have about 55 rounds so I guess if I can't find a load I like as much I can just keep those strictly for a hunting round.

rlb, if you want to part with those speers that would be great. I still haven't decided what the end fate is for the gun but your at the top of the list if I decide to let it go.

I'll try to get them out this week. Just started a cold so I can't say for sure, but I'll have them out by this weekend.

Oh PM me your address again please.
